Joshua Mikhaiel is a documentary wedding photographer based on the Gold Coast, shooting across Australia and overseas. He has been photographing weddings for more than twelve years and describes himself as a professional third wheel and story teller, which is close to the truth of how the work feels. Weddings, elopements and engagement sessions are all offered, and the elopement side is a genuine speciality rather than a bolt-on.
The work is documentary: quiet, honest moments rather than long posed sequences. He is candid about what he does not do — no half hour spent recreating a shot from Pinterest, no tiara arranged on a bed of roses. What he looks for instead is late afternoon light on a floral arrangement, a reflection in a window, a tangled veil, the small tears. On the largest elopement collection a roll of 35mm film is shot, developed and scanned alongside the digital work.
Couples who want the day recorded as it happens, and adventurous couples in particular. He has photographed elopements across Australia as well as in Alaska, Seattle and New Zealand, and has written a guide to fifty places to elope around the country organised by state. Couples nervous in front of a camera are steered toward an engagement session first.
Weddings start at $4,590, elopements at $3,250 and engagement sessions at $750. Every wedding price covers his time on the day and all photographs edited by him, delivered in an online gallery at high resolution.
