Gez Xavier Mansfield has photographed weddings since 2012 — close to fifteen years and hundreds of days — working out of the Hunter Valley and across to Newcastle and the coast. The published work runs from vineyard lawns and golden paddocks under the Brokenback range to a sandstone church, a marquee lit at dusk and a beach at Nelson Bay. He trained in theatre and film design at NIDA, and it shows in how the light is used.
Style & Approach
He describes the work as fine art documentary photography, and his method as the opposite of directing: he works quietly, always watching, rarely intervening, aiming to be invisible enough that the day unfolds as it should. In his words the best photographs happen when you forget the camera is there — no stiff poses, no manufactured moments. He believes in less direction and less noise, and says nature does most of the work while he stays ready for it.
