Gavin Cato lives near Shellharbour on the Illawarra coast and shoots weddings across the Southern Highlands, Berry, Kangaroo Valley and the South Coast of New South Wales. He is candid about not being the sort of photographer who enjoys the spotlight: his preference is to stay behind the lens and let the day happen. Natural and timeless is how he describes the look, built on genuine emotion and candid moments rather than long directed sessions. He is explicit that drawn-out photoshoots are not his method — a quick round of portraits and you are back with your guests, which he frames as the whole point of the day. He was one of the first photographers in Australia to fly a drone at weddings, and aerial frames with the couple small in a large landscape have become his signature.
Couples marrying at a country property, a winery or a coastal venue who want the setting in the picture as much as themselves, and who would rather spend the day celebrating than posing. He also offers pre-wedding and engagement sessions, and midweek packages for small weddings and elopements tailored on request.
Edited photographs arrive on an online gallery and a USB just ten days after the wedding, often sooner, both at full print resolution — on his most popular package the USB comes in a presented box with a stack of prints inside. A drone is included in the photography packages rather than charged as an extra. A booking fee of $1,000 secures the date, payable in one sum or across two or four instalments, with the balance due four weeks before the day. Albums are a separate purchase from $1,800, and the full pricing and package guide is sent on request.
