Thomas Stewart lives in Bowral and shoots around sixty weddings a year, most of them across the Southern Highlands and the South Coast. He was a lawyer until the end of 2009, went full time as a photographer in early 2010, and photographed his first wedding in 2008. The portfolio runs from Bendooley Estate and Kangaroo Valley to Croatia, Scotland and Bali, but the centre of gravity is firmly local.
Documentary, in his own words — he prefers to record what is happening rather than arrange it, and describes his method as relaxed and natural: he will direct but not pose. Looking at a year of his work, most frames are unposed and candid, built from watching a day closely. He shoots Sony a9iii bodies with prime lenses and carries at least three cameras and six lenses to every wedding.
Couples who want the day recorded as it happens by someone who lives twenty minutes from the venue. Coverage runs from four hours to ten, so a short ceremony booking and a full day are both catered for, and he is happy to build something in between. Engagement shoots and albums are offered, and the portfolio makes clear that same-sex weddings and elopements are core work rather than a footnote.
Most couples spend around $5,000 for roughly eight hours; the full price and package list comes by enquiry. Expect around 800 edited high-resolution images delivered through a password-protected gallery about four weeks after the wedding, with high and low resolution downloads. Albums are $795 or $1,195 depending on size and cover. A small travel fee applies beyond roughly two hours from Bowral, and he carries twenty million dollars of public liability cover.
He has written openly about his own wedding, where a storm destroyed the marquee the afternoon before, and what it taught him about how little of the plan actually matters.
