James Field has photographed more than 600 weddings from a bush block in the Adelaide Hills, and the thing he says he values most is not the pictures — it is being a calming presence who lowers the stress and raises the fun. Couples who were dreading being photographed keep telling him the same thing afterwards: that it was easier than they expected and they actually enjoyed themselves. His work spans the Hills, McLaren Vale, the Barossa, the Murraylands and further afield, and the tone is consistent throughout — warm, unhurried and casual.
Casual and natural is how he describes it himself, and the frames bear it out: confetti tunnels, sparklers, first looks, a dog walk before the ceremony, guests laughing over pizza. He works quietly enough that couples describe finding moments in their gallery they had missed themselves, and guests routinely mistake him for a mate rather than a supplier. The light is soft and the posing is minimal.
Couples who want a full day recorded honestly rather than staged, and who like the idea of a photographer they can relax around. The Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Barossa are his home ground, but a farm, a shed, a vineyard or a beach all suit the approach equally. Especially good for anyone nervous in front of a camera.
Three packages, all with professionally edited full-resolution photos in a private online gallery, a licence to print and share without watermarks, and free backup for at least two years. Six hours is the shortest option; the other two run until the very end of the night with no hour limit. Photos arrive within two weeks. There is no travel charge anywhere he can drive to and back on the day.
The album is not a highlights reel. The 8x10 inch glossy hardcover that comes with the top package runs to about 250 pages and contains every photograph from the day — no choosing favourites, no culling. It arrives roughly a month after the wedding, and can be added to either of the other packages afterwards.
