Krystal Dempsey has photographed weddings full-time since 2008, having started Clarity Photography in 2006, and now shoots around fifty weddings a year. She is based on what she calls the Hawkesbury side of the Blue Mountains, and the mountains are where the bulk of her work sits: her own site carries seventeen weddings at Dryridge Estate in the Megalong Valley alone, along with Chapel Hill Retreat, Collits’ Inn at Hartley Vale, the Everglades at Leura, Echo Point at Katoomba and three at Bilpin.
She describes the look as ranging from elegant to vintage, and the shooting style as relaxed, candid and photojournalistic mixed with classic bridal portraiture. The reasoning she gives is that the day is about the couple rather than about the photographer directing it: she will talk through the timeline and guide people when guiding helps, then stay out of the way. Her line for what she is after is that the best photographs do not just show what the day looked like, they remind you how it felt.
Couples marrying anywhere from the upper mountains to the Hawkesbury flats who want someone who has already worked their venue, and couples planning a mid-week elopement. She also offers portrait, family, newborn and maternity sessions, and works alongside a videographer. An engagement session is included in the two largest wedding collections and can be booked on its own.
Wedding collections run from $2,950 for six hours to $6,650 for twelve hours with two photographers and a 12 by 12 album, and every collection includes travel within the Blue Mountains, the Hawkesbury, Greater Western Sydney, Lithgow, the Hunter Valley and the Southern Highlands. Expect around a hundred images per hour of coverage, so roughly 600 or more in total. A preview gallery of at least 150 images arrives two to three weeks after the day and the full set within eight to ten weeks. The elopement collection is $750 for one hour, mid-week only, for up to twenty guests and no more than three hours.
Depth at one venue. Seventeen separate weddings published from Dryridge Estate is not a portfolio entry, it is a working knowledge of one property in every season and every light — and for a couple who have booked the Megalong Valley, that is worth more than any claim about style.
