Boorowa / Hilltops, New South Wales

The Hilltops region sits in the South West Slopes of New South Wales, about an hour north of Yass and two hours from Canberra, taking in Boorowa, Young, Harden, Murringo and Rye Park. It is cool-climate wine and cherry country — Young is known as the cherry capital of Australia — and the landscape runs to open grazing hills, granite outcrops and long avenues of poplars that turn gold in April and May.

Wedding venues here lean rural and private: woolsheds and shearing quarters, homestead gardens, cellar doors among the vines, and paddocks hired bare for a marquee. Ceremonies are often held on a family property or at one of the small stone churches in Boorowa and Harden. Because most venues are working farms rather than dedicated function centres, couples usually bring in their own catering, hire and styling, and many book a whole weekend rather than a single day.

The seasons are pronounced. Spring brings canola and cherry blossom, autumn brings vintage and the poplars, and summer can be genuinely hot and dry — shade and water for guests matter. Winter is cold and frosty, and beautiful for it, but most celebrations move indoors.

Supplier depth is thinner than in Canberra or Wagga Wagga, so many couples book photographers, celebrants and florists who travel in from those centres, alongside a small group of photographers, growers and caterers based in the Hilltops itself. Accommodation is limited outside Young, so guest logistics and a shuttle are worth planning early.
