Fika Pictures is Al, a documentary wedding and portrait photographer working from offices at Mornington on the Mornington Peninsula and at West Hobart in Tasmania. Close to two decades in, the promise is a plain one: you will never be asked to play up to the camera, and the words ‘say cheese’ will not be uttered. Only a limited number of weddings are taken each year.
Natural, timeless and documentary, often described as reportage or photojournalism. No posing, jumping, twirling or dancing to order; the work is candid and unobtrusive, capturing the day as it unfolds. Available light is preferred and flash largely avoided, which is what gives the photographs their consistent look and lets atmosphere and personality come through honestly.
Couples who want the day documented rather than directed, and who would rather have an unobtrusive presence than a photographer running the room. Weddings range from smaller affairs and coastal elopements to multi-day celebrations, including Indian, Chinese and Jewish traditions, across Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Hobart and Tasmania.
Coverage typically begins two to three hours before the ceremony and runs through the speeches and first dance. Between 300 and 500 processed images arrive in both colour and black and white, six to eight weeks after the day, with a 4K slideshow and indefinite cloud access. An unlimited personal-use licence means images can be printed and shared freely. Travel is included for all Melbourne weddings. Pricing is sent by email on enquiry.
The albums are treated as the point of the whole exercise. Two handmade ranges are offered — traditional leather-bound books by Jorgensen and the eco-friendly Folio range — built with fine leathers, archival papers and high quality printing, designed with the couple involved and with unlimited revisions before anything is printed.
