Petal Smith is a floral studio and art gallery on Greville Street in Prahran, run by master florist Ken Yeong. Ken has twelve years of floral design behind him across Australia and South East Asia and a background as an art curator, and the two sit together deliberately - the studio hangs exhibitions by emerging Melbourne artists alongside the flowers. It is a queer-owned business that says so plainly, welcoming people of all backgrounds, identities, abilities and experiences.
Contemporary, sculptural and unmistakably composed: spiral-technique hand-ties, single strong gestures, and arrangements approached as compositions of colour, texture and balance. The daily range runs from soft garden mixes to bold amaranth and banksia forms, wrapped in plain paper against a flat blue ground. Flowers are the florist’s choice, taken from the day’s best at local farms and markets, and the studio’s wedding work has run to a medley of orchids for one couple and a burgundy-and-blush reception table for another.
Couples marrying anywhere across Melbourne who want their flowers to say something particular rather than follow a template. The studio asks whether your story is fun and funky, classic and elegant, or a little left of centre, and designs to the answer. Recent weddings include a church ceremony in Canterbury and a summer reception at a Yarra Valley winery estate, so it travels beyond the inner south-east.
Begin with the wedding enquiry - it asks for your date, both venues, guest numbers, which of nine floral items you want quoted, and a budget range, and you can attach a Pinterest or mood board. Ideas come back before you meet, and the meeting itself is a casual studio visit in Prahran. There is no minimum spend and no set package; every wedding is quoted. The studio is open Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5.30pm and Saturday 11am to 3pm.
Petal Smith publishes the single most useful number a couple can be given at the enquiry stage: allow roughly $75 to $100 a guest for your wedding flowers. No other florist in this directory prices per head. It turns an unanswerable question into arithmetic you can do before you send a single email - and it sits above four budget bands, so you can see where your own number lands before the first conversation.
