Pearl Button Bridal Couture is an ethical and sustainable bridal studio outside Milton, and it is the real thing rather than a claim: it has been accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia and audited since 2018. Everything is made in-house by Dinah Mitchell, who has kept the labour-intensive craft of the true couturier alive for more than three decades. Her studio sits on her own property, solar-powered and running on tank water, on paddocks she and her husband spent two decades reforesting into wildlife habitat.

Dress Styles & Designers

One label — Dinah's own. Gowns are made from silk, including the linings and interlinings, chosen because it uses less water than other fabrics and is a biodegradable, renewable fibre. There are 27 made-to-measure designs from $2,500 to $7,800, plus full couture, silk tulle veils, and hand-crafted French lace and silk overlays, overshirts and wraps.

Ideal For

A bride who wants her dress to mean something beyond the day. It suits anyone with a family gown to work with — the Re-Imagine service remodels and repairs an existing dress or builds a new one from vintage fabric — and anyone who wants to wear the dress again, which Dinah will design for from the outset. It also suits a bride outside the region: consultations and fittings run over Zoom or in Sydney.

The Need-to-Knows

Start with a one-hour learning consultation, $175 — and that fee comes off the price of the dress if you go ahead. Sessions run at the Milton studio, at Lewisham in Sydney, or over Zoom; Dinah is in Sydney weekly. Made-to-measure takes a minimum of 16 to 20 weeks, and a calico toile is fitted before the real silk is cut. A full couture gown usually runs to five or more fittings. Standout Feature

She designs the dress so you can wear it again. Dinah's line is that “a wear once dress is really not the thing anymore” — and “design for reuse starts on the drawing board”. She will build your gown so it can be transformed afterwards into something you will actually put on again. She is a co-founder of Slow Fashion South and was one of the pioneers of sustainable fashion thinking in Australia, with a Master of Design and a background teaching it.

Appointment Policy

Start with a one-hour learning consultation, $175 — it covers the design process, why fabrics are chosen, and how fitting and construction work.
That $175 comes off the total price of the dress if you choose a Pearl Button gown.
Consultations run at the Milton studio, at Lewisham in Sydney, or over Zoom.
Dinah is in Sydney weekly, so an in-person meeting there can usually be arranged.
Appointments are essential — complete the request form to book.
Bring a very close friend or family member; sometimes coming alone is best for a first fitting. More people can be accommodated on request.
Bring ideas of the style you want if you have them, but the design service is there if you do not.
Allow a minimum of 16 to 20 weeks — this is a small studio working to slow-fashion principles.

Dinah Mitchell has practised the craft of the true couturier for more than three decades.
She holds a Master of Design and a Bachelor of Fashion and Textile Design, and has taught sustainable fashion at secondary and tertiary level.
She was one of the pioneers of sustainable fashion thinking in Australia and co-founded Slow Fashion South.
All making is done in-house in the studio outside Milton — nothing is sent away.
The studio is solar-powered and runs on tank water, on land she and her husband spent two decades regenerating into bird and wildlife habitat.
Gowns are made from silk including the linings, chosen for using less water and being a biodegradable renewable fibre.
She keeps a large store of vintage trims, laces and luxury textiles to draw on, and sources new lace from makers working on old machines.
