Overview & Vibe
South Coast Brides opened in Nowra in 2018 and has since sold gowns to more than 4,000 women. It exists because of a specific problem its founders kept hearing about — brides “told to try on size 6 gowns and just imagine it” in their own size, or belittled about their budget. Its answer was a big, calm, spacious store where “your body, background or budget have no baring on how well you are treated”. It has the awards to match: Excellence in Inclusion, Excellence in Small Business (2023), The Resilience Award, a Silver Retail Business Award and Gold for Retail Business Excellence at the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards.
Dress Styles & Designers
149 wedding dresses and more than 600 pieces in total. Bridal is Justin Alexander, Stella York, Lillian West, Maya Bella, Elle Couture and Trellis Lane; bridesmaids are Sorella Vita, Tania Olsen and Nicoletta; and there is a full mother-of-the-bride, formal, cocktail, veil and jewellery range on top.
Ideal For
Any bride who has been made to feel like a problem somewhere else. Sizes run 6 to 36, and the store is emphatic that this is real stock rather than a claim — it says it holds dozens of gowns in sizes 18 to 28 specifically. Prices start and run. It is two hours from Sydney or Canberra, and about half its brides travel from Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong.
The Need-to-Knows
Appointments are 90 minutes and by appointment. Open Tuesday to Friday 10am–5pm and Saturday 9am–1pm; phone (02) 4427 4441. Bring nobody, one or two trusted people — many brides shop alone and enjoy it. No photography in store. Come with minimal makeup, no spray tan, and most people wear no bra. Allow 12 to 15 months. Pay a deposit and the balance on collection, or in full. Special-order deposits are non-refundable and orders cannot be cancelled; in-store purchases carry a strict 7-day exchange.
Standout Feature
The sample range is the whole point. Most boutiques stock samples in one or two sizes and ask you to imagine the rest; this one carries 6 to 36 on the rack so you try on gowns that actually fit. The store puts it plainly: it has “invested deeply in all body shapes and sizes because all women want the same thing on their wedding day”. It is also embedded locally — the team competed in the Stars of Nowra charity gala.
