The Waves Sports Club
About
Overview & Vibe
The Waves is Bundaberg's big community club, and its wedding offer is exactly what that implies: three modern function rooms, a serious in-house kitchen and a team that does this constantly. It opened on 19 October 1968 as Across The Waves, founded by Italian immigrant farmers who had come to Australia aboard the Angelina Lauro — across the waves of the Indian Ocean — and it now has more than 70,000 members and an Emigrante Statue out front honouring them. The club was redeveloped in 2020.
Setting & Style
Indoor, modern and flexible rather than scenic. The Sails Function Room is the large one at 300 square metres — open floor space, adjustable furniture and staging, twin projectors, an exclusive bar and a dance floor. Pier One sits directly adjacent at 120 square metres, lower-ceilinged and more intimate, with its own bar (and an optional partition to hide it), dual projectors and its own dance floor. Both can be dressed with full table, chair and high-bar options, and both have private entries. A third room, the Boardroom, seats 14 and is for meetings rather than weddings.
Ideal For
Larger Bundaberg weddings that want the catering handled by one operator, and couples who would rather a professional function team than a DIY venue. The club calls its kitchen “Bundaberg's most established and most reputable internal functions and outside catering service”, and it runs the full range — canapé, cocktail, buffet and up to five-course meals. It will also cater off site, delivering to another venue with full-service staffing, which makes it useful even to couples marrying elsewhere in the region.
The Need-to-Knows
There is no ceremony space. The club publishes three indoor function rooms and describes no garden, lawn, terrace or dedicated ceremony area — this is a reception venue, and a ceremony would need to happen elsewhere. No pricing is published: an information pack is offered but sits behind an enquiry, and there is no per-head rate, room hire fee or minimum spend anywhere on the site. There is no accommodation. Note also that the club is a licensed gaming venue with a TAB, Keno and a gaming room, and that the largest room's stated 300 is a standing/cocktail figure — seated it is 250.
Standout Feature
Scale and certainty. Very few regional venues can seat 250 for dinner, dress the room, run the bar, cook the food and light the stage from one contract — and the club states it has catered weddings and formal events “upwards of 500”. For a big Bundaberg wedding it is the obvious room; for a small intimate one it will feel like a club.

Price Notes
- Nothing is priced, but the rooms are documented in detail. THE SAILS FUNCTION ROOM (300 sqm, the larger): recommended capacity 250 theatre, 300 standing/cocktail, 250 sit-down. It offers huge open floor space with modern decor, adjustable furniture and staging options, full table, chair and high bar dressing options, adjustable sound and lighting, a cordless microphone and lectern, WIFI, twin projectors with laptop connectivity, an exclusive bar, a dance floor, a private designated smoking area, multiple entry and exit access including private, adjustable air-conditioning and a full range of catering options. Its floor plan shows a stage, a green room and a bar. THE PIER ONE FUNCTION ROOM (120 sqm, directly adjacent): 50 theatre, 120 standing cocktail, 80 sit-down. Intimate floor space with a low ceiling, adjustable furniture, full dressing options, adjustable sound and lighting, cordless microphone and lectern, WIFI, dual front and rear projectors with laptop and Apple connectivity, an exclusive bar with an optional partition to hide it, a dance floor, a private outside smoking area, multiple entry/exit access and air-conditioning. THE BOARDROOM: a maximum of 14, with a kitchenette, single projector, telephone, WIFI and Ethernet — for training and business meetings rather than weddings. CATERING is in-house and is the club's stated speciality: "Bundaberg's most established and most reputable internal functions and outside catering service", covering canape, cocktail, buffet and up to five-course meals, with services, facilities and equipment, staffing options, bar and beverage, and wrist band and ticketing available. The club also caters OFF SITE — "With a complete portfolio of Food Safety approved, portable equipment and transport, The Waves can cater your next big event right to the door of your chosen venue" — with full-service staffing teams, which is worth knowing for couples marrying elsewhere in the region. Packages can be tailored or taken pre-packaged. An information pack is advertised for download but no document is served; enquiries go through a functions and catering team. The club is a licensed gaming venue with a gaming room, Keno, TAB and bingo, and displays responsible-gambling notices throughout.
