Overview & Vibe

A 20-acre property on the banks of the Burnett River at South Bingera, fifteen minutes from the Bundaberg CBD, trading for over ten years. Gum trees, grassy knolls running down to a private beach on the river, and a working camp-and-retreat operation the rest of the time — archery, mini golf, canoes, a low ropes course. It has taken the Wedding Industry Awards’ regional number one twice, in 2022 and 2024.

Setting & Style

The reception is the Country Matters Barn — a large country-style barn with an open fireplace, timber posts, brick floors and festoon lights strung the length of it, seating up to 100. Next to it is a rustic amphitheatre and open grass area for the ceremony. Elsewhere there are several BBQ areas, a brick outdoor bar, cocktail spots among the trees, and the river beach with canoes pulled up on the sand.

Ideal For

Couples who want to run their own day on their own budget — bring the drinks, bring a caterer if you like, and keep the whole property (and up to fifty-four beds) for two days.

The Need-to-Knows

It is a genuine BYO venue, drinks included — unusual, and the main reason to look here. “We are a BYO venue for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.” Drop the drinks off a couple of days early and they go in the fridge or cold room. Corkage from $20 per head covers bar set-up, bar staff, all glassware and fridges, water and ice. There is no table service.
You get the property for 48 hours if you book a reception or a whole wedding — midday the day before to midday the day after. A ceremony-only booking gets 12 hours, morning until a 6pm pack-up.
Music stops at 11pm and everyone is out by midnight. The venue names its residential surroundings as the reason, and asks overnight guests to keep noise down after that.
Catering is a partnership, not an obligation. Mumma & Me Bites supply grazing tables, entrées, buffet mains, desserts and even the wedding cake, quoted on guest numbers — “Alternatively, you may use your own caterer of choice, and we provide full access to all required services onsite.” Self-catering is welcome.
It sleeps a lot of people, in a camp way. A four-bedroom cabin for 16 with all linen, two A-frame dorms sleeping up to 22 each (mattress and fitted sheet only — guests bring the rest), and camping for caravans, with a shower and toilet block outside the cabin.
Furniture comes with the full package only — round tables, trestle tables, white chairs and bar tables are supplied “when you book an entire package with us”. Bench seating and white fold-out chairs are otherwise a hire item.
20% non-refundable deposit holds the date; a tentative booking lapses after one week. Final payment is due two weeks out, and cancellation after final payment forfeits everything.

Price Notes

Serve your drinks in our bar area alongside the Country Matters Barn. Drop your beverages off a couple of days before your wedding, and we will keep them cool in our fridge or cold room (if required due to quantity). In collaboration with Mumma & Me Bites, we are able to offer a corkage service from $20 per head, the corkage fee covers: + Bar set up + Bar staff + All glassware and fridges + Water + Ice. Unfortunately we do not offer table service.
Catering is quoted: 'In collaboration with Mumma & Me Bites, we offer catering packages to suit your needs including pre-dinner platters and grazing tables, entrees, buffet style mains and desserts. Mumma & Me Bites are also able to provide your wedding cake as dessert if required, with tea and coffee also available. Pricing is quoted on your number of guests and the catering required. Clientele are welcome to self cater.' Accommodation is also POA: 'Please get in touch for all pricing enquiries.'
Access times are published and differ sharply by booking type: 'For Ceremonies only, you will have access to the property from the morning of the event, to be packed up by 6pm the evening of the event.' 'For Receptions and entire weddings, you will have access to the property from midday the day before, to be packed up by midday the day after the event.' Restated as '12 hours' and '48 hours' respectively. 'Should you wish to complete a rehearsal, please discuss for scheduling.'
A hard curfew, and the venue gives its reason: 'Due to the residential location of Riverside Retreat, all music and entertainment must cease no later than 11pm, with all guests to have vacated by midnight. Should you be staying in on-site accommodation, please keep ongoing noise to a minimum.'
A ceremony-only or reception-only booking should confirm what furniture is included.
Booking and cancellation terms are published in full. 'A tentative booking can only be held for one (1) week. The booking is not considered confirmed until Riverside Retreat has received your initial 20% non-refundable deposit and booking form.' 'Final payment is due 2 weeks prior to your date.'
