Bridal Dress Stores · Toowoomba / Darling Downs, Queensland · Visit in person
Toowoomba’s only bridal boutique led by a fully qualified designer, and one of the rare cases where the shop and the label are the same person. Jacqueline May has designed and made gowns in Toowoomba since 2008 now in its 17th year from a studio in the heritage-listed Harris House on the corner of Clifford and Margaret Streets. It is by appointment only and deliberately intimate: “the design studio is only attended by pre-arranged appointments as I share my time making gorgeous things happen behind the scenes”.
One label, and it is the house’s own: 27 named gowns in the Jacqueline May signature collection — Tatum, Harper, Holly, Ella, Luca, Constance, Camille, Febronia, Gabbi, Georgia, Lucienne, Francesca, Alita, Magnolia, Kyra, Nina, Mia, Hannah, Briar, Mira, Poppy, Morgan, Siobhan, Emily, April, Sara and Lexi — with “over 60 gowns” in the studio to try. The signature is “timeless, elegant, feminine, and romantic”, ranging “from minimalist chic to intricate French lace”. Crucially the designs are “interchangeable”: fabrics swapped, sleeves added, necklines adjusted, “all designs are concepts that can be personalised just for you”. Accessories — organza jackets, capelets, lace toppers, detachable sleeves and overskirts — are “all designed in house”, and there is a bespoke veil service making “one off pieces that are of heirloom status”.
A bride who wants a gown made for her rather than ordered for her, at a price she can find out before she books. It suits a small party — the studio has “space for a maximum of two guests, not including the bride” and it suits a short runway: “some custom gowns can be made at up to months’ notice”. It also suits a bride who wants a bargain, because the studio does sell off the rack: “Most definitely and often a generous discount will apply.”
Custom made gowns and that price includes all sizing and fitting an unusually plain answer in a category that mostly quotes on request. Consultations are free, and so is the follow-up. Try-on samples are mostly sized 10 to 16, “some samples fall either side of this bracket”, but the gown itself is “crafted to your exact measurements”. Book 12 to 8 months before the wedding to see the current collection. Payment is cash, card or direct credit, with a flexible lay-by plan. Open Wednesday to Friday 10am–2pm and Saturday 9.30am–1.30pm, by appointment text or phone 0403 244 589. Free client parking on site, entry from Clifford Street, with Grand Central directly opposite.
20 real brides, each with their own page. Not a testimonial wall — a gallery per couple, photographed at real Queensland weddings: a barrel room, a helicopter on a Darling Downs paddock, a red-dust sunset, a Queenslander verandah, a beach, confetti on the way out. Because Jacqueline designs, makes and fits every gown, that archive is something almost no stockist can show: the same person’s work on 20 different women, on the day.
