About
The Wimmera occupies Victoria’s western plains between the Grampians and the Mallee, centred on Horsham and taking in Dimboola, Nhill, Warracknabeal, Murtoa and the Little Desert. It is broad-acre cropping country — wheat, barley and lentils — with enormous skies, silo art trails, and the pink salt of Lake Tyrrell and the Pink Lake at Dimboola within reach.
Weddings here make use of what the region has: farm sheds dressed for a reception, homestead gardens, riverside reserves along the Wimmera River, the Little Desert Nature Lodge, and historic halls and hotels in Horsham and Nhill. Ceremonies are frequently held on family land. As with most inland regions, marquee hire, catering and bar service are usually brought in rather than supplied by a venue.
The light is the region’s signature — long, low and clear across flat country, with sunsets that photographers travel for. Spring brings canola and wildflowers through the Little Desert; autumn is mild and settled. Summer is hot and exposed, and shade for guests is a real planning consideration.
Horsham is the regional centre and carries most local suppliers, with additional photographers, celebrants and florists based at Dimboola and Nhill or travelling from Ballarat, Bendigo and Adelaide. The Western Highway runs straight through the region, making it a comfortable drive from both Melbourne and Adelaide.
