Gary Patterson has photographed weddings around Byron Bay since 2010, after earlier years spent on landscapes, seascapes, surfing and industrial work. He counts more than three hundred wedding shoots and close to a hundred thousand images made since he turned to weddings, and he works the whole northern rivers stretch — the beaches, the headlands and the hinterland villages behind them.
He calls it the cloak of invisibility: blending into the background so couples barely notice him, on the view that authenticity only shows when people stop being self-conscious. The approach is relaxed and candid, and he is firm that the pictures should reflect the couple’s taste rather than his own, which is why he supplies a deliberately wide spread of images and lets them choose.
Couples marrying around Byron Bay, Broken Head, Lennox Head or Ballina who want someone local enough to know which beach works at which hour, and couples eloping quietly. He also shoots portraits and keeps a separate industrial and infrastructure line.
Six wedding collections are published outright, running from a two-hour single-photographer package to ten hours of coverage, each including a lay-flat album and a private online gallery. Prices include GST and cover Byron Bay, with other destinations quoted on request, and a booking fee secures the date. Drone coverage, a second shooter, video and a slideshow are available as extras.
Every image is supplied in more than one version — colour, black and white and sepia — so couples curate their own favourites rather than accepting one edit. The albums are lay-flat, printed at a photo lab rather than inkjet, on photographic paper flush-mounted to a hard substrate.
