Julia runs Fire & Fly from the Coffs Coast, working Coffs Harbour, Sawtell, Bellingen and the wider Mid North Coast. She started professionally in 2020 after a failed road trip around the country landed her there, and her own words for the work are joyful, whimsical and real. The galleries bear it out — a backyard wedding at Bonville under parasols, a rainy day at Glennifer Hall in Bellingen, confetti on a lawn, groomsmen laughing against a hedge.
Editorial and warm rather than distant, and she is unusually direct about it: *“I’m not a fly-on-the-wall photographer.”* Instead she uses gentle guidance, movement-based prompts and constant feedback — and promises not to drag you away from your party for hours, force cheesy poses, or leave you in awkward silences. She describes one of her own weddings as beautifully timeless and editorial, which is a fair summary of the whole body of work.
Couples who dislike being photographed and want someone who will talk them through it. Also well suited to a small ceremony: coverage starts at two and a half hours, so a short elopement is a real option rather than a stripped-back full day. She welcomes all bodies, lovers and love stories, and acknowledges the Gumbaynggirr people as custodians of the land she works on.
Weddings start at $2,000 and elopements at $1,600, with coverage from two and a half up to eight hours — though short sessions are not always available on peak-season Saturdays. Every booking includes a pre-wedding catch-up in person, over Zoom or by phone, timeline help and location scouting. Sneak peeks arrive within a few days and the full gallery within four weeks, in high and low resolution, available for a year and linked to an Australian print lab. Expect a reply within five business days.
She explains where the work comes from, and it is not a marketing line: as a teenager, when her best friend died, the first thing they did was print every photograph of her. *“I’ve never lost sight of the profound power in those little postcards of us.”* That is a rarer thing to find on a wedding supplier’s page than another list of inclusions.
