James Rose has photographed weddings since 2010 and has more than six hundred behind him, working from Sydney’s lower north shore. He caps the diary deliberately — a maximum of two weddings a week and no more than fifty-five a year — on the reasoning that the alternative is a one-size-fits-all service. He shoots the majority of weddings alone, and he is the photographer on the day rather than someone the couple has not met.

Style & Approach

Natural, candid and documentary, with the focus spread across the couple, their friends and family, the location and the atmosphere rather than concentrated on set-piece portraits. He is relaxed by nature and says that comes through in the work: direction is kept to a minimum on the view that the more someone is posed the less comfortable they look, so he leans on humour and on people enjoying themselves. There is a separate 35mm film strand for couples who want it.

Ideal For

Sydney couples who want the day documented rather than directed, and couples marrying out of the city who would rather not pay for the distance. He also offers engagement sessions, elopements and micro weddings, and works alongside a videography studio. Same-sex weddings are explicitly welcomed.

The Need-to-Knows

Wedding photography starts at $3,350 and every collection includes unlimited images from the day, around eighty to one hundred and twenty photographs per hour of coverage, two pre-wedding consultations, a slideshow, and an album credit of $250 to $350. Travel is included, up to 300km from the Sydney CBD on packages of eight hours or more and 100km on shorter ones. Photographs arrive within twenty-eight days, extended by about ten days over Christmas and New Year. He carries twenty million dollars of public liability cover, shoots two cameras writing to two cards each, and keeps every wedding backed up for five years.

Standout Feature

The travel is in the price. Most photographers who work beyond their own city add a distance charge; here a wedding three hundred kilometres from the CBD costs a couple exactly what one in Sydney costs, which for the Southern Highlands, the South Coast or the Hunter Valley is the difference between a quoted price and a final one.

Albums & Prints

Base Album, Thirty-Six Sides — $1,530. Handcrafted in Australia; additional sides are $42.50 each, or $85 per spread, so the album is sized to the wedding rather than chosen from fixed sizes.
Typical Fifty-Two Side Album — $2,210. The average album designed in 2025, at around 2.3 images per side.
Fifty-Two Side Album With Premium Leather And Embossing — $2,650. The same album with a premium leather cover and embossed personalisation.
Leather Or Premium Leather Cover — $205. An upgrade from the linen, cotton, silk and faux leather covers included in the base price; $155 on a parent album.
Custom Cover Design — $235. Full customisation of the front cover including all design services; $85 per parent album or album box.
Parent Albums, Eight By Eight Inches — $925. A linen replica of the main album of up to forty-six sides; two copies are $1,480 and three are $2,080.
Album Design Deposit — $765. Payable to begin the design, with the balance due once the final design is approved and any package album credit deducted.

Appointment Policy

Two pre-wedding consultations are included, plus advice whenever it is wanted.
The first covers timings and locations; the second runs through the day in detail a few weeks beforehand.
Booking early is advised, with a maximum of two weddings a week and fifty-five a year.
