Alex Marks has photographed more than twelve hundred weddings, and the published work runs from a South Coast vineyard and a Southern Highlands manor to Braidwood, Western Australia’s Red Bluff, a village in Treviso and a lawn at Canggu in Bali. The pictures lean dark and cinematic — confetti exits, dancefloors lit by string lights, couples placed small against an escarpment or the steps of the Opera House. There is a lot of movement in them and very little standing still.
He is candid about being willing to walk a long way for a picture: in his own words he has ruined a few pairs of Jimmy Choos, and he likes going off-road a little, climbing rocks and jumping fences. Couples who say they have never been in front of a camera and are dreading it are, by his account, the most common thing he hears, and the ones already in the portfolio said exactly the same thing. The result is a portfolio weighted toward couples in motion and guests caught mid-celebration rather than arranged groups.
Couples marrying away from home, and couples who want someone who has seen enough wedding days to help build the running sheet. He offers to run through the timings for the day, which he describes as something he has become expert at across those twelve hundred weddings. Also for couples who would rather be walked somewhere interesting for their portraits than posed on a lawn.
Nothing about price, hours or delivery timing is published, so the figures a couple needs will come from him directly. Booking starts with the enquiry form, and he asks for as much detail as possible so the reply can carry everything at once. He works in photography only and will introduce couples to videographers he knows personally rather than filming himself; he also keeps a published list of the planners, celebrants, florists, venues and entertainers he rates.
The reach of the work. Nine published weddings span four countries, and the same photographer covers a Southern Highlands house, a Bali lawn and an Italian street without the look changing. For a couple planning somewhere far from Sydney, that track record is the thing on offer, and fine art albums are made afterwards to print and display the images.
