Overview & Vibe
The GC Bridal Lounge is the shopfront for Kate Gubanyi, a Gold Coast bridal designer who sells only her own gowns from a by-appointment studio on Railway Street in Southport. It is not a stockist: every dress on the rail and on the website is her design, cut to the bride’s own measurements. The room is deliberately unstuffy — “feel comfy (shoes off in the lounge), refreshed (French sparkling and signature cocktails) and informed” — with a private dressing room, triptych mirrors and a large lounge for guests. Photographs are actively encouraged, which is still unusual in bridal retail: “We know brides want to take photos - that’s fine!”
Dress Styles & Designers
One label, Kate Gubanyi, across 124 bridal styles in the studio’s own catalogue. Kate is “inspired by current catwalk trends, geometric shapes and modern and historical patterns”, working in silk, organza, tulle, lace and satin with French lace, couture bust cups and modern elastic boning “to shape garments without adding bulk”. The shop files gowns under its own style taxonomy — boho, beach, ball gown, mermaid, fishtail, corset, empire, minimalist, sheath, vintage, backless and more — alongside menus for colour, material, season, length and sleeves. Gowns are made in ivory or nude as standard, with other colours to order, and designs can be genuinely altered: “Beading can be added, waistlines lowered and a spectrum of colours ordered.”
Ideal For
Brides who want a made-to-measure gown without couture pricing. The range runs, with an “ “ rail, and the studio is candid about how it gets there: “By minimising our costs and streamlining our business model we pay more for our fabrics and tailoring and less for old fashioned marketing methods.” It suits brides who want to change something — straps, beading, a lowered waist — rather than accept a gown as sampled, and brides outside the Gold Coast, since prices include free postage within Australia and overseas. Ready-to-wear and sale samples are on the rack in sizes 8 to 20.
The Need-to-Knows
By appointment at the Southport studio, open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday 9am–5pm, closed Tuesday, Sunday by arrangement. Ask whether an appointment fee applies when you book. Made-to-size delivery is 5 months from when specifications and heel height are received, and the store recommends ordering 6 months out. Deposits and full payments on sale, custom and made-to-measure gowns are non-refundable; a restocking fee applies to a style change once fabric has been bought. A faulty gown is repaired rather than refunded, with written notice required within one week of delivery.
Standout Feature
You can buy the sample you are looking. The studio states plainly that “the images you see on our website are real samples”, photographed on local models by local photographers, and that the gown delivered is that dress in your measurements — so the website is the rail, not a lookbook. For a bride ordering online from interstate, that is a materially different promise from a stockist showing a label’s campaign imagery.
