Wedding Photographers · Mackay, Queensland · By appointment
Kieron Place has been photographing the Mackay region for more than twenty years, and weddings sit alongside family portraits, maternity and newborn sessions, school formals, events, real estate and sport in a genuinely general practice. He works as a one-man band with his wife Jenny assisting, and the pitch is practical rather than poetic: be present for the whole day, stay out of the way, and come back with everything that mattered.
His approach is documentary and unforced. He describes capturing the bride having her hair and makeup done, the groom nervously adjusting his tie, and the real cake cutting rather than the staged one, and he argues that a wedding photographer needs almost every skill set at once because the day asks for event, portrait and fashion work in the same afternoon. He tailors the day around the couple and lets them dictate the shape of it, offering gentle guidance rather than direction, and he talks with couples beforehand so that on the day he is another familiar face rather than a stranger with a camera.
Couples marrying in and around Mackay who want a clear, published price before they enquire, and who would rather buy coverage by the hour than a bundled collection. The two-hour package is aimed squarely at elopements and the eight-hour at a full day, so a small courthouse ceremony and a farm wedding are equally at home. Couples marrying at Airlie Beach or in the Whitsundays are catered for with a stated travel charge.
Four packages are published outright: two hours at $770, four at $1,430, six at $2,090 and eight at $2,750, with additional hours at $330 and travel to Airlie Beach or the Whitsundays at $275. Travel within fifty kilometres of Mackay is free. A $200 non-refundable deposit secures the date and the balance falls due two weeks beforehand. He asks to be booked no less than four weeks out, and photographs are delivered within two weeks of the wedding.
The turnaround, and he says so plainly: edited photographs within two weeks, before the couple are back from their honeymoon. Against an industry norm of six to twelve weeks that is unusually quick, and it comes with the full set from the day on a private online gallery, supplied at both print and social sizes, with no per-image selection to negotiate.
