Hannah Benwell is an Adelaide wedding photographer whose whole approach is built around making couples feel unselfconscious. She reckons about eight in ten of the couples who book her open with some version of “we are so awkward”, and the pictures she takes are her answer to that. Expect laughter, movement and a photographer who is comfortable being the one to break the ice.
The work is documentary and natural, built on real interaction rather than arranged poses. She describes directing rather than posing, and much of a day is spent encouraging couples to move, hold each other close and talk to one another while she works around them. Prime lenses, flashes and remote triggers make up the kit, chosen so she has to move rather than stand still.
Couples who want a relaxed, candid record of the day rather than a formal one, and who would rather be gently directed than posed. She is openly queer and LGBTQI friendly, photographs elopements as readily as full weddings, and works with couples who are nervous in front of a camera. She also offers a photo and video option covering the day alongside a partner videographer.
Wedding galleries usually run to around eight hundred edited, high-resolution images, delivered through a password-protected online gallery with both high and low resolution downloads. A few sneak peek frames arrive within a couple of days, and the full gallery lands between six and eight weeks later. Pricing is shared through a guide on request rather than published on the site.
She is happy to meet before you book, whether that is a coffee, a drink, or a visit to her home studio, and will set up a video call for couples living interstate. It is a small thing that says a lot about how the day itself is likely to run.
