Dennis Tan photographs weddings from Churchlands, across Perth, the Swan Valley and the South West. He came to it sideways: a hip injury ended his triathlon habit, he picked up a camera to stay near the action, and sport turned into people. Four collections run from four hours to twelve, starting at $2,950, and each one states roughly how many photographs come back — 300 to 400 at the short end, 900 to 1,200 at the long one.
Relaxed, candid and documentary, with gentle guidance rather than posing. He offers direction when it is wanted, lifts the energy when it flags, and steps back when something real is happening — an approach couples describe as laid back and without excessive staging. He is explicit that the aim is to photograph the people and connections, not just how the day looked, which he traces to growing up with very few photographs of his own childhood.
Camera-shy couples, and anyone who wants to feel unobserved. He describes himself as calm, friendly and slightly quirky, and says so partly to reassure people who dread being photographed. A Malaysian Australian who speaks English and Mandarin, he works comfortably across cultures, and the Platinum collection exists specifically for large cultural weddings with multiple ceremonies and locations. LGBTQIA+ couples are welcomed explicitly.
Collections start at $2,950 and the full price list is sent on request. Every one includes professionally edited high-resolution images, a private online gallery and a keepsake box of 6x4 inch fine art prints, from ten prints on Bronze to thirty on Platinum. Gold and Platinum add a second photographer, for four and six hours respectively. Booking takes a signed contract and a 30 per cent retainer. Sneak peeks land within 24 to 72 hours and the full gallery in roughly 8 to 12 weeks.
The albums are a serious separate craft: handcrafted in Sydney from ten-colour inkjet cotton rag prints, bound as seamless double-page spreads, with custom embossing and a choice of forty-five covers in leather, silk and linen. The design runs through an online proofing system with two rounds of revisions before production.
