Michael Petersen photographs weddings from a base at Mareeba, on the Atherton Tableland behind Cairns, and works across the Tableland, Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas. The pictures move easily between a rainforest deck, a country paddock ringed by gum trees and a beach at the end of the afternoon, which is a fair description of the range this corner of Far North Queensland asks a photographer to cover.
He describes a style that combines photojournalistic and artistic approaches, aiming for candid, emotional moments alongside composed portraits. In practice that reads as unhurried coverage: the ceremony as it happens, groups arranged without fuss, and quiet detail frames in between.
Couples marrying anywhere between the Tableland and the coast who want one photographer for the whole arc of the day, and who like the idea of a photographer who lives in the region rather than travelling in for it. The three collections scale from a short elopement to a full day, so a small ceremony is served as deliberately as a large one.
Collections run from $1,200 for two to three hours to $3,800 for up to ten hours, and every collection includes professional editing, travel within the region and a private online gallery. Edited photographs typically arrive within four to six weeks. A free consultation is offered before booking, in person or online, and destination work within Australia and overseas is available on request.
The prices are published in full and then described as negotiable, which is unusual and useful: the figures give a couple somewhere to start rather than a form to fill in.
