About

Overview & Vibe

David Bailey has photographed for nearly two decades and owns Obscura Cameras, the only dedicated camera store in Ballarat, where film developing, printmaking and teaching happen under one roof. That shop shapes the wedding work: he shoots digital, offers real film on a 1960s Hasselblad developed locally, and prints and binds the albums himself. Coverage runs from a one-hour ceremony through to a full day.

Style & Approach

In his own words the photography is natural, candid and stress free, and he keeps things relaxed and genuine because it should never feel forced. He spends time understanding the people in front of him before lifting the camera, and describes the aim as images that feel effortless yet deeply personal. The same calm carries across whether he is photographing a wedding or a portrait.

Ideal For

Couples marrying in and around Ballarat, at any scale. A ceremony-only hour suits a registry wedding or a small gathering; the larger collections bring a second photographer, an engagement session and printed work. Couples who want something on actual film can add rolls to any collection, which is unusual and comes from the darkroom he runs.

The Need-to-Knows

Hourly coverage with one photographer runs $770 for an hour up to $2,420 for four. The collections take two photographers: $770 for a ceremony, $3,415 for five hours, $4,950 for eight and $6,000 for complete coverage, with engagement sessions, canvases, parent books and prints included at the upper tiers. Film is $98 a roll, $294 for three and $490 for five.

Standout Feature

The film option, and the shop behind it. Very few wedding photographers still shoot medium-format film, fewer develop it themselves, and he does both a few doors from where the prints are made — so a couple can have digital coverage and a handful of Hasselblad frames from the same day.
