Jem&I Designs is a boutique wedding and event stationery studio based in Melbourne, creating and delivering globally. It runs nine semi-custom collections alongside a bespoke service, so the same studio can handle a couple who wants to choose a ready design and change the colours, and a couple who wants something drawn from scratch. The studio sums up its own outlook plainly: “we are firm believers in less is more and that everything should be done for a reason.” In practice that means confident type, a strong colour sense and close attention to paper and finish, rather than ornament for its own sake.
The nine collections cover a wide spread, from classic and considered through romantic script, bold modern type, playful shapes and bold colour, to an Amalfi Coast or coastal treatment. Printing runs to digital, white ink, letterpress, metallic foil, embossing and debossing, screen printing and wax seals, on stock from card through to acrylic, foamboard, linen and satin. Every collection can be customised: ink and paper colours, shapes, printing type, wording, and illustrations chosen from the studio’s own libraries.
Couples who want a coordinated look running from the save-the-date all the way through to the bar sign. The on-the-day range is broad: menus, place cards, table numbers, beverage menus, coasters, vow booklets, placemats, napkin rings, cocktail stirrers, welcome signs, seating plans and fabric signage are all part of the same collections, so the paper and the signage match without extra work. It also suits couples marrying overseas or interstate, since the studio ships worldwide, and couples who would rather receive print-ready files and arrange their own printing, which the studio offers on any of its designs.
Semi-custom orders take four to eight weeks from the point your final wording is supplied, and a bespoke commission runs three to five months from first questionnaire to delivery. Quantities start at 30 for printed pieces. Two rounds of design and copy changes are included, proofs are sent on screen rather than printed, and further rounds are charged in thirty-minute increments agreed with you first. A 50 per cent deposit secures your place in the production schedule and the balance falls due before anything goes to print. Bespoke work is quoted individually against a stated minimum investment.
Very few studios in this trade publish their prices at all, and this one publishes a price guide for its semi-custom range, broken down by quantity, by shape and by printing method. Save the dates, invitations, details and RSVP cards, envelopes, menus, place cards, table numbers and signage all carry published figures. Luxury printing such as letterpress and foil, and a number of the on-the-day extras, are quoted on enquiry instead. Being able to see most of the numbers before making contact is unusual, and it makes budgeting a suite a good deal easier than guessing at it.
