Pink Teapot is a small letterpress print and design studio in Airport West, in Melbourne’s north-west, where wedding invitations are printed one at a time on vintage Heidelberg Windmill presses. The studio describes itself as made up of lovers of tactile and personable experiences, and the work is handled that way: every ink is mixed by hand and each piece of velvety-soft card is fed into the press individually. The register is old-school romance rather than high gloss — ink pushed deep into thick cotton paper so the impression is something you can both see and feel.
Four print methods are offered and can be combined inside a single suite: letterpress, foil, flat digital print and digital white ink. A letterpress invitation alongside a digitally printed details card is suggested as a way to bring colour in without pricing the suite out of reach. The semi-custom collection runs to fourteen designs, each named after a city or region, and any of them can be changed — colours, typefaces, even the motifs — at no additional charge, with no limit on how many rounds of changes you make. House papers for letterpress are cotton stocks in 450gsm and 600gsm, with duplexing offered up to 700gsm for a deeper impression.
Couples who specifically want letterpress and care about how the paper feels in the hand, rather than couples shopping purely on price. It suits a bride who would rather start from a finished design and personalise it than brief a designer from scratch, though full custom design is available and artwork you already own can be printed. Because suites are posted nationally, it works for couples anywhere in Australia, not only Melbourne ones.
The presses themselves. This is not a studio that sends letterpress out to a trade printer: the invitations are pressed in-house on antique Heidelberg Windmills, and anything not letterpressed goes to named local printers and foilers rather than offshore. Blind impression — pressing the design into the paper with no ink at all — is offered as a finish in its own right.
