Sandie Bertrand came to wedding photography from photojournalism. She worked as a press photographer for The West Australian and won Young Australian Photographic Journalist of the Year from the Walkley Foundation in 2009, then began shooting weddings in 2006 and has built West Creative around them ever since. Four ABIA Wedding Photography wins for Western Australia followed, in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021. The instinct is still a reporter’s: watch, wait, and take the picture when it happens.
She calls it documentary wedding photography, and she means it fairly literally — the aim is to tell the story of the day rather than stage it. That covers the tender gestures and the details chosen with care, but also the laughter and the tears of everyone who came. Her working manner is deliberately relaxed, on the reasoning that the easiest way to get good photographs of people is to make sure they are enjoying themselves. Candid coverage is mixed with unhurried portraits.
Couples across a wide range of scale, because the packages genuinely span it. A two-hour micro-wedding or elopement package sits at one end and a premium collection covering preparations through to the first dance at the other, with a second photographer included on the two larger options. Every package is described as customisable, so hours can be added or removed, and coverage can run from about three hours to the whole day. Dogs at the wedding are actively encouraged.
No prices are published. All three wedding collections and the micro-wedding package are listed by inclusions with a contact prompt instead of a figure, and the upgrades are quoted on application. What is published is what you get: professionally edited high-resolution images in a password-protected gallery, no watermarks and full download access, and two folders — one colour, one black and white. Sneak peeks arrive within a week and the final gallery within twelve. A booking fee secures the date and the balance falls due a month before. Prices are stated to include tax.
The photojournalism background is not decoration. A Walkley-recognised press photographer brings a particular discipline to a wedding — getting the frame right the first time, in whatever light exists, without asking anyone to do it again.
