Sam Riles is based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, at Manly, and has been photographing weddings since 2015 — her first was for a close friend who gave her free rein, and she says she still loves it as much. She describes herself as a life romantic: curious, enthusiastic, a deep feeler. She also shoots commercial, lifestyle, portrait and personal branding work for brands, but weddings have their own gallery, their own FAQ, their own enquiry route and a published price, and she takes only a limited number each year.
Her own description is that the work sits somewhere between editorial and documentary, drawn to genuine, unposed moments. The line that captures it best is hers: I don’t create moments. I notice them well. She is naturally observant, takes time to understand the people in front of her, and is explicit that she will not over-direct the day or turn it into a performance — she reads the room, builds trust, and stays in the background.
Couples who describe themselves as awkward in front of a camera, and who want the day noticed rather than staged. She photographs same-sex weddings and shot her first LGBTQ+ couple shortly after it became legal in Australia in 2017. Good for anyone marrying in bad weather, too — she argues overcast and rainy days give the most flattering light and plans for it rather than around it.
She keeps the gallery deliberately tight at 500 to 600 images, and says why: she would rather you open it and love every frame than scroll past duplicates.
