Mt Bundy Station is a working cattle property on the banks of the Adelaide River, established in 1911 by buffalo hunter Fred Hardy and family-run since 2007. It is about ninety minutes from Darwin Airport, and it is emphatically a station wedding — red dirt, buffalo and donkeys in the paddocks, a licensed corrugated-iron bar called the Cheeky Bull Bar, and a fleet that includes two Rolls-Royces and a bull catcher.

Setting & Style

Four named ceremony spots: a 300-year-old banyan tree, shaded most of the day; the historic bronco panels and rustic cactus garden with the billabong and distant hills behind; the billabong itself, full of birdlife from May to September; and the river, amongst ancient bamboo on the Adelaide River bank. Receptions go to the Beer Paddock beside the bar, with an entertainment stage and lighting already rigged; the fully grassed Homestead Lawn under a historic mango tree; or the riverbed, a shady oasis of ghost gums that the station calls a blank canvas.

Ideal For

Couples who want the whole place to themselves and a weekend rather than an evening. Every wedding option except the elopement package gives exclusive use of the grounds, and there are ten dwellings, glamping tents and powered and unpowered campsites so guests sleep where they celebrated. DIY is expected and welcomed — outside vendors are fine, and there is a preferred supplier list.

The Need-to-Knows

Dry season only. The station is an outdoor venue and takes celebrations April to September. The liquor licence covers only the Cheeky Bull Bar and Beer Paddock; a mobile bar elsewhere needs a temporary licence the station may be able to obtain, at a fee. Fire pits are allowed at the Billabong House and riverbed flats but never during a fire ban. Nothing about the wedding is priced — catering, bar and equipment hire are all quoted to your guest number and inclusions.

Standout Feature

A destination wedding without leaving the country, as the station puts it. It sits en route to Kakadu and Litchfield, so interstate guests can hire a motorhome, drive through one national park to get married and out through the other on the way home. Few venues can make a wedding into a fortnight of somebody else’s holiday.
