Nigel Unsworth runs a boutique studio at 89 Queen Street in Berry, on the NSW South Coast — one of the few wedding photographers in this database with a street address rather than a base city. Most of his weddings are across the Southern Highlands and the South Coast. He has studied creative arts and photography at university, is a PhD candidate in creative arts, and has won awards nationally and internationally, including three Silvers at the AIPP Epson Professional Photography Awards NSW.
Timeless, artistic and elegant, which is how the studio describes itself and also what the pictures look like: strongly lit, richly graded, and unafraid of weather, dusk and deep shadow. Heritage houses, stone chapels, autumn foliage and open paddocks recur. There is a separate candid gallery for the looser reportage frames, and fine-art printing is a stated part of the craft rather than an afterthought.
Couples marrying at a Southern Highlands country house or along the South Coast who want considered, produced portraits rather than pure reportage — the kind of frames built to be printed large and hung. Because every wedding is photographed and edited by him personally, with nothing outsourced, the work is consistent across the whole portfolio.
Photography alone starts from $3,850 and the album collection from $4,650, both covering up to eight hours. Each includes high-resolution edited images in a password-protected online gallery and a pre-wedding consultation; the album collection adds album design and a Queensberry album. There is a studio to visit in Berry and a telephone number to call, which is rarer than it should be.
He also teaches — off-camera lighting workshops run from the studio — and it shows in the wedding work. The lighting in these pictures is deliberate rather than found, which is why the difficult conditions in the portfolio, rain, dusk, harsh midday, read as choices instead of compromises.
