About

Overview & Vibe

JK Bridal Couture is a one-designer studio on Logan Road at Stones Corner, and it does one thing that almost nobody else in Brisbane does: vintage and retro. Not vintage-flavoured lace on a modern A-line - actual 1950s shapes, tea-length skirts, polka-dot lace, coloured petticoats. Joanne Hasson has been designing bridal for over twenty years and handcrafts every gown herself from scratch. It is by appointment only, one bride at a time, and the appointment runs ninety minutes with a glass of champagne.

Dress Styles & Designers

One label - JK Bridal Couture, designed and made by Joanne Hasson - offered three ways. The Styles of You range is the clever one: a mix-and-match system where you choose a bodice (plain or lace, boat neck, V, strapless), then sleeves (spaghetti straps, cap, long), then a skirt - 50s retro, tea length or floor length, in soft chiffon drape, layered tulle, or polka-dot lace over a coloured petticoat - plus embellishments in pearls or crystals. Above that sits full couture: a one-off gown drawn, patterned and toiled in calico before any fabric is cut. Alongside bridal, JK Retro Dresses supplies a 1940s-60s cocktail range for bridesmaids.

Ideal For

The bride who has been to shop after shop and not found her shape - which is exactly why Joanne built the Styles of You range. It suits retro and pin-up weddings, registry and city-hall ceremonies where a tea-length dress beats a cathedral train, and anyone who wants to be involved in the design rather than pick from a rail. The studio states plainly that it caters to brides of all shapes and sizes and keeps a dedicated plus-size bridal service, built around designing to the body rather than altering down to it.

The Need-to-Knows

By appointment only - the designer is the whole studio, so there is no guarantee she is free for a walk-in. Appointments run 90 minutes with complimentary champagne. Couture runs through several stages with client input at each: consultation, measurements, pattern, a calico toile you can try on and change before fabric is cut, then construction and hand embellishment, with fittings throughout. Fabrics and samples are held in house. No prices, size run or lead times are published anywhere on the site - all of that is quoted at consultation, which is worth knowing before you go.

Standout Feature

The calico toile. Before a metre of your actual fabric is cut, Joanne builds the whole gown in cheap cloth so you can put it on, look at it, and change the neckline or the sleeves while changing them still costs nothing. That is proper couture method, and it is rare at this end of the Brisbane market.

  • By appointment only - the designer is the studio, so a walk-in may find nobody free.

  • Complimentary champagne is served during the appointment.
  • The first couture consultation is complimentary, and you are encouraged to bring pictures, sketches or ideas.

Dress Designers

  • Joanne Hasson. Description: The studio's designer and its only one, with over twenty years in the bridal industry. She handcrafts every gown from scratch and meets each bride personally at a complimentary consultation. Her route into design was necessity - raised by a single mother, she made her own school uniform skirts and formal dresses - which is the stated root of her focus on fit and on brides feeling beautiful rather than on-trend.
  • JK Bridal Couture. Description: The house label, offered as the mix-and-match Styles of You range and as full one-off couture.
  • JK Retro Dresses. Description: The studio's sister range - a 1940s, 50s and 60s inspired formal cocktail line used for bridesmaids, cut for re-wearability.

Dress Experience

  • Every appointment at JK Bridal is with the designer herself. It runs 90 minutes with a glass of champagne, and the first couture consultation costs nothing - you bring pictures, sketches or a vague idea, and Joanne talks through designs, fabrics and embellishments and recommends what will suit. If you take the Styles of You route you build the gown from her samples: pick a bodice, pick sleeves, pick a skirt, pick the pearls or crystals, and she makes it. If you go full couture the process is properly staged - measurements are taken, the design is drawn, a pattern is cut to your body, and then a toile is made: a complete calico replica of your gown that you try on, so shaping is corrected and you can move a neckline or change a sleeve before any real fabric is touched. Only then is the gown constructed and embellished by hand. The studio describes brides bringing in years of frustration from other shops, and the Styles of You range exists specifically because Joanne watched brides fail to find a shape that suited both their body and their taste.
