Alex Shore photographs weddings from Torquay, at the eastern end of the Great Ocean Road, and is one of very few wedding photographers in this database actually based on the Surf Coast rather than travelling down from Melbourne or across from Warrnambool. He works alone, meets every couple over coffee before quoting, and photographs the day without watching the clock. Alongside weddings he shoots family, pregnancy and baby sessions, surf and ocean work, local business portraits and community events — a generalist practice in a small coastal town.
Relaxed and playful, in his own words, and the wedding frames bear it out: paddocks running down to the ocean, veils caught in the wind, guests laughing in close, and black-and-white reportage sitting beside warm, sunlit colour. Ceremonies happen on clifftops, in timber sheds and under dried-flower arches. He visits any venue he has not worked before, at the same times of day as the wedding, to read the light and find the spots for the couple, the bridal party and the family photographs in advance.
Couples marrying on the Surf Coast or along the Great Ocean Road — Torquay, Jan Juc and the coast beyond — who would rather have a photographer who lives there than one arriving for the day. The absence of a clock is the pitch: coverage runs until it is no longer needed, so a long, loose, outdoor day suits this better than a tightly scheduled one.
No wedding price is published anywhere, and no range either — every couple is quoted personally after a first conversation, so the figure has to be asked for. Standard wedding packages include a keepsake box holding a USB of high-resolution and low-resolution photographs, with the low-resolution set delivered first through an online link. Albums are designed by hand and charged separately, as are framed prints and canvases. No delivery timeframe is stated.
