• Raffaele Ciuca has been doing this since 1956 and tells you so before it tells you anything else. The founder was a master tailor from L'Aquila in Abruzzo who spent his early years delivering fine suits by bicycle, left Italy in 1954, and by 1956 had built a small Melbourne atelier with his wife Tina where, in the house's own words, 'appointments ran long because conversations ran deep'. Gowns took over, and four generations later the business runs two boutiques with different characters: Brunswick, the original, larger and built for scale, with an ex-sample Sample Studio attached that the house recommends outright if your timeline is short; and Armadale on High Street, deliberately intimate and designed for one-on-one appointments, with a Luxury Bridal Suite. Both keep the same hours, including a late Thursday. The part that distinguishes it is the third address: an Alterations Atelier on Victoria Street with its own team, which the house frames as continuous with its tailoring origins rather than as a service bolted on afterwards. Twelve couture houses are stocked, several exclusive to this address, including Vera Wang Bride and Vivienne Westwood.
