Overview & Vibe

A shearing shed on a 2,400-acre working cattle farm between Rylstone and Mudgee, in the hills of central-west New South Wales. The shed is over a hundred years old and was still classing wool until 2016; the family converted it in 2020 to hold their daughter’s wedding, liked the result, and opened it to other couples. The whole property is exclusively yours for the weekend.

Setting & Style

Rustic in the literal sense rather than the styled sense. The alterations were built from timber cut on the property — ironbark posts, black cypress beams and rafters, stringybark battens — and the roofing tin was repurposed to line the walls of the new bathroom. Chandeliers hang from the corrugated roof; hanging greenery runs the length of the trestles. Outside there is a rustic entertainment shed, a marquee site, a lawn-games area and, in the venue’s own words, “loads of potential ceremony spots to make your own”, with Tongbong mountain behind.

Ideal For

Couples who want a genuine farm wedding they build themselves — own caterer, own drinks, own suppliers — on a property that will not be shared with anyone else, and who are happy at 100 guests or fewer.

The Need-to-Knows

Seated package three includes the farmhouse for six. Rates are from the venue’s December 2024 pack — confirm before budgeting.
Bring your own alcohol, and there is no corkage fee. The venue provides a large glass-fronted fridge, or you can use its arrangement with The Globe Hotel in Rylstone, which delivers and takes back what you do not drink.
No curfew and no noise restrictions. The venue’s own answer is “Feel free to make as much noise as you want, any time of day or night.”
Food is not included and there is no in-house catering. The venue supplies a commercial kitchen for your caterer, or you can use food vans. Music, celebrant, photography, florals and stationery are likewise yours to arrange — it keeps a list of local suppliers.
Ceremony seating is for 20 guests only. The rest stand. Worth planning for at a 100-guest wedding, particularly with older guests.
Access runs from two days before to one day after the function, which is what makes a self-built wedding practical here.
Sleeping is the constraint. The farmhouse takes six and camping is allowed on the night of the event; everyone else stays in Rylstone, 15 minutes away, or Mudgee, 35.

Price Notes

Every wedding price is published, but in the venue's seven-page wedding guide rather than — so ask for the guide when you enquire.
Three packages, five prices, all fixed fees rather than per-head rates. Package One, elopements and micro weddings: 25 guests, seated or cocktail, $4,000. Package Two, cocktail: day-of coordination, choice of ceremony site, wine barrels and stools, $6,000 for 60 guests or $8,000 for 100. Package Three, formal and seated: accommodation for six guests, day-of coordination, choice of ceremony site, tables, chairs, cutlery and crockery, $7,000 for 60 guests or $9,500 for 100. All packages can be further customised.
What the venue hire includes, verbatim from the reception page: 'Exclusive use of Tongbong Woolshed. Access up to 2 days before and 1 day after the function. Bathroom facilities which include toilet and shower. Tables, tablecloths and chairs for up to 100 guests. Crockery, glasses and cutlery. Basic kitchen equipment. Wine barrels. Bar area. 12m x 6m Marquee if required. Indoor dance floor and stage area. Unlimited parking. Outdoor heaters and fire pit area. No curfew for guests.' The ceremony page adds a choice of location, outdoor seating for up to 20 guests, a wedding arbour and day-of coordination.
BYO alcohol with no corkage, which is unusual enough to lead with. From the FAQ: 'Can we bring our own alcohol, and if so, is there a corkage fee? Yes, we allow you to supply your own alcohol with no corkage fee.' The pack expands: 'You can provide your own drinks. We have a large glass fronted fridge for your use or we have an arrangement with The Globe Hotel, Rylstone who provide you with a very competitive drinks package, including delivery and returns for unused drinks, or you can choose your own supplier.'
Food is not included and the venue does not cater. From the pack: 'The following are not provided in the packages: Food and beverages for the function. We provide a commercial kitchen with can be used by external caterers. Alternatively, there are food vans in the area which can be used. Musicians/DJ (or you can play your own music). Invitations and stationery. Celebrant. Photography. Florals.' Because catering is entirely external, the venue states no dietary position of its own and dietary_options_supported is NULL. The Services page also offers equipment hire separately - 'commercial kitchen equipment, table and chairs, cutlery, crockery and glassware' - at prices given only on enquiry.
No curfew and no noise restrictions, stated twice. FAQ: 'Are there any noise restrictions or curfews? There are no noise restrictions or curfews. Feel free to make as much noise as you want, any time of day or night.' The reception inclusions repeat 'No curfew for guests'. On a 2,400-acre farm this is credible rather than marketing.
Monivae is in postcode 2850; 2849 covers Kandos, Bylong and the Rylstone hinterland. Recorded as 2850, which is what two of the venue's three published sources say.
'ACCOMMODATION' (3 pages, dated 9 May 2024) lists roughly twenty third-party places to stay in Rylstone, Kandos and Lue - cottages, guesthouses, the Globe and Rylstone hotels, Kandos Fairways Motel, Rylstone Caravan Park at $27 powered and $22 unpowered. None of it is the venue's own accommodation and none of it is recorded as this venue's pricing.
