Genevieve Gowns

Newcastle, New South Wales

About

Overview & Vibe

Genevieve Gowns sits in a heritage shopfront on Swan Street in Morpeth, the old river port outside Maitland, sharing its window with the alterations business it grew out of. It is the newest bridal boutique in the Hunter region and the only one in the Maitland area, and its pitch is affordability without the wait: "similar wedding dresses to the brand name bridal labels without the high price tag".

Dress Styles & Designers

The store works directly with manufacturers rather than stocking named designer labels, which is what lets it price gowns from $400 to $2,000 and alter them freely. Bridal, formal, cocktail and special occasion wear are all carried, and formal gowns can be ordered as bridal in white, ivory or other colours. Custom sizes and colours are available to order on selected designs.

Ideal For

Brides in Maitland, Morpeth and the Hunter Valley who would otherwise drive into Newcastle, and above all brides working to a budget or a deadline: sizes 8 to 22 are on the rack for immediate purchase, and ordered gowns arrive in four to six weeks. It also suits a bride who has bought elsewhere and needs alterations, since the thirteen-year alterations business trades from the same shop.

The Need-to-Knows

Open Tuesday to Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday; Thursday and Friday run to 4pm, the other days to 3pm. Book through the site, on 0494 111 105, or by message on Facebook or Instagram. Prices run $400 - $2,000. Alterations are in house. The store publishes no appointment fee.

Standout Feature

Its origin. This is a fitter's shop: Jennifer Arthur spent thirteen years altering other boutiques' gowns, watched brides be limited by sample sizes of 8 to 12, and opened a store that puts 8 to 22 on the rack. The alterations bench that prompted it is still in the same building.

Dress Experience

  • Genevieve Gowns is the newest bridal boutique in the Hunter region, and it grew out of an alterations bench. Its owner, Jennifer Arthur, spent more than thirteen years fitting formal and bridal wear through her business Altered By Jen, and the store exists because of what she saw there: "After seeing so many clients limited by traditional sample sizing, Jen dreamed of creating a more inclusive and personalised bridal experience." The sequence is published plainly - Altered By Jen outgrew its home studio and became a shopfront in August 2023, bridal wear was added in February 2024, and Genevieve Gowns launched in March 2024. Both names still share the one shopfront on Swan Street in Morpeth, a heritage river port village outside Maitland, and the sign over the window reads "Altered by Jen | Genevieve Gowns - Alterations, Bridal, Formal". The proposition is explicitly the opposite of designer bridal: gowns from $400 to $2,000, sourced direct from manufacturers, in sizes 8 to 22 on the rack to try and buy the same day, with custom sizes and colours available to order and changes made to suit the wearer. Orders arrive in four to six weeks rather than the usual five to eight months, and alterations are done in house by the same team that has been fitting gowns for thirteen years. Formal dresses can be ordered as bridal gowns in white or ivory, which widens the range further.

  • Gowns ordered in arrive within 4 to 6 weeks, which is markedly shorter than the five-to-eight month lead times common in this category.
  • The store works directly with the manufacturers and can make changes to a wedding or formal dress to suit a customer's requirements; custom sizes and colours are available to order on selected designs.
  • Formal dresses can also be ordered as bridal gowns, in white, ivory and other colours - which widens the effective bridal range beyond the bridal rack.
