Belles and Beaux has dressed Newcastle brides from 464 Hunter Street since 1989. Elizabeth founded it with a business partner after running Libby’s Boutique on the same street in the early 1970s, and has been sole owner since 2006. It is a long-standing city-centre shop rather than a studio, open seven days, with more than three hundred gowns on the racks.

Dress Styles & Designers

Six international labels — Essense of Australia, Stella York, Martina Liana, All Who Wander, Maggie Sottero and Rebecca Ingram — plus Oxford Street, a collection the store has to itself and hand-picks for size range, styling and price. Bridesmaids are Sorella Vita and Mori Lee. Silhouettes run from boho and beach through to ball gown, mermaid and a-line.

Ideal For

A bride who wants to try gowns on rather than order blind, and one shopping a fuller size. The plus-size collection is one of the largest in the Hunter, with gowns to try in sizes 18 to 30 and stock up to AU 32. Bridesmaid samples run 8 to 30, so a whole party can be fitted in one visit.

The Need-to-Knows

Appointments are free and run an hour and a half on weekdays and Saturdays, an hour on Sundays; bring up to three guests. Gowns are made to size rather than to measure, take four to six months, and need a third of the price as a deposit. Alterations are not done in store — the team recommends fitters in Newcastle, Warners Bay and Taree, so budget for that separately. No food or drink beyond bottled water.

Standout Feature

Oxford Street, the store’s private collection, is the reason to make the trip: twenty gowns you will not find in another Australian boutique, each with its sample size published so you know before you arrive whether one will go on.

Appointment Policy

Book online or phone (02) 4048 1110. Appointments are free.
Allow a few days' notice for a weekday appointment and one to two weeks for a weekend one.
Bridal and bridesmaid consultations run an hour and a half on weekdays and Saturdays, and an hour on Sundays.
You can try gowns on without an appointment, but only if a changing room is free when you arrive.
Bring up to three guests. The floor space is limited, so tell the store in advance if your party is larger.
Only bottled water is allowed in store — no champagne, coffee, food or other drinks.
You may photograph the gowns you try on, and video call from the fitting room.
Collecting an ordered gown is a 30-minute appointment; give at least a week's notice, and one to two weeks for a wedding gown.
Saturday collections are pick-up only, since the fitting rooms are booked with bridal consultations.
Trading hours are Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5pm, Thursday to 6pm, Friday to 5pm, Saturday to 4.30pm and Sunday 9am to 1pm.

Dress Experience

Elizabeth opened Belles and Beaux in 1989 with business partner Angela Nicholson, having already run Libby's Boutique on Hunter Street in the early 1970s, and bought Angela out in 2006 to become sole owner.
That same year she was diagnosed with leukaemia and went on a clinical trial. She spent two years away from the shop while manageress Michelle O'Connor and the staff kept it running, and has been in remission since.
She still oversees the store, and puts her health down to the pleasure of watching brides find their gown.
Gowns are made to size rather than to measure, so most brides will need a fitter to finish the shaping. The store keeps a list of people it trusts for that work.
Oxford Street is the store's own collection, chosen in-house with size range, styling and affordable pricing as the priorities, and each gown's sample size is published.

Wedding gowns take four to six months to be made and bridesmaid dresses three months. Allow a further month before the wedding for alterations.
Rush orders on wedding gowns carry a surcharge that varies by designer.
