Melissa Waite Couture makes one gown at a time, for one bride at a time, in Newcastle. Melissa is a dressmaker and couturier with more than 27 years in the construction of designer garments: she studied Fashion Technology, completed the Costume Making course at NIDA in 1996, then spent eleven years in film, theatre and television alongside some of Sydney’s best costume makers and cutters before moving into bridal in 2007.

Dress Styles & Designers

There is no label and no rack — every gown is designed with the bride and made from scratch, in fabrics and laces sourced nationally and internationally. The work in her own gallery runs from a plain silk column to a heavily beaded lace bodice, corset backs, long lace sleeves and full tulle skirts. She also makes mother-of-the-bride, bridesmaid and flower-girl dresses, so a whole party can be dressed to match.

The couture process is a real one and takes time: consultation, fabric within your budget, detailed measurements, the gown made up first in calico toile as the template for your own pattern, a toile fitting, then two to three more fittings before the final one. Allow months, not weeks.

The toile. Before a scissor touches your silk, the whole gown is made in calico so you can see the shape and it can be corrected. The first consultation covers your ideas, inspiration and personal style, and settles the design.
Fabric is chosen next, within the budget you set.
Detailed body measurements are taken, and the gown is first made up in calico toile.
The toile fitting shows you the basic design and shape before the real fabric is cut.
Two to three further fittings check the fabric and the placement of embellishments.
A final fitting and adjustments come before you collect the gown ahead of the wedding.

Melissa Waite has over 27 years in dressmaking and the construction of designer garments.
