Wedding Photographers · Cairns / Port Douglas, Queensland
Matthew Evans photographs weddings across Cairns, Port Douglas and Palm Cove, and he lives in the region he shoots — Tropical North Queensland, with his wife, their son and two chihuahuas. A decade of dated real weddings sits on his site: Sugar Wharf and Sea Temple at Port Douglas, Peppers and Nu Nu at Palm Cove, Silky Oaks at Mossman, Fitzroy Island, Lake Tinaroo, Millaa Millaa Falls and Castaways at Mission Beach. The reef, the rainforest and the cane country all appear, and so does the light that comes with them.
He puts a figure on it: ninety per cent candid, ten per cent posed. In practice that means the day is followed rather than staged, with the couple moved into good light for a short stretch and otherwise left alone. Preparations, ceremony, the long golden hour and the dancefloor are all covered in the same unhurried register.
Couples marrying anywhere between Mission Beach and the Daintree who want a photographer who already knows the venues, the tides and the wet-season sky. The two-hour option suits an elopement or a small beach ceremony; the longer options suit a full day that runs from getting ready through to the last song. He also shoots engagements and families, and he travels worldwide.
Weekend coverage runs $4,500 to a 7pm finish or $5,000 through to the dancefloor, and Monday to Friday weddings are $300 less on each. Short coverage starts at $1,950 for two hours with further hours at $450. Between 600 and 800 fully edited images arrive four to six weeks afterwards in an online gallery, ready to download at high resolution or to order as prints, wall art and albums. Saturdays between April and November book out early.
The archive is the argument. Ten years of named Far North Queensland weddings, each one dated and each one at a venue a couple can recognise, is a far better guide to what a wedding here actually looks like than any single highlight reel.
