Jen Tighe photographs weddings across Central Victoria entirely on film, working from a cottage in Maldon and describing herself as a Castlemaine wedding photographer. She is a one-person team who takes only a limited number of weddings a year, and she says she does not take lightly the privilege of being invited along to such an intimate day in someone’s life. The result is quiet, unhurried coverage of the sort of day that feels like a community getting together rather than a production.
Everything is shot on 35mm and medium format film, with a couple of fast modern cameras, a medium format body for portraits and a few point-and-shoots along for the ride. Her approach is documentary: she catches the subtle and unexpected moments unobtrusively, then offers gentle guidance for the parts where you want it, such as portraits. She aims for a soft, nostalgic feel inspired by the film photographs in her mother’s albums, and asks couples to spend the day present rather than performing for the camera.
Couples planning an intimate wedding or an elopement in Bendigo, Ballarat, Daylesford, the Macedon Ranges or around Castlemaine, who would rather have honest photographs of how the day felt than a curated magazine spread. She will take on a select few larger weddings a year on request, and recommends a second photographer once the guest list passes 150.
Collections start at $2,600 for elopements and $3,950 for weddings, running up to $4,950 for couples who want a handmade fine art album included. Extra hours are $550 each. A signed contract and a non-refundable 25% deposit secure the date, with the balance due 30 days beforehand. Previews arrive within two weeks and the full set in eight to ten weeks. Travel is included anywhere within an hour of Maldon; beyond that it is $150 per additional hour.
The fine art albums. Designed with you and made by hand, they are bound in a choice of linen, leather or velvet on museum-quality paper with seamless binding and archival ink, in three sizes from $1,200. It is the part of her work she talks about as a keepsake for generations rather than a product.
