Taj Kempe has been photographing weddings in the South West of Western Australia since 2016. He started the business in Bunbury and now works out of Busselton, covering Dunsborough, Yallingup, Margaret River and back up the coast, with the occasional run to Perth. The tone he sets is deliberately low-key, he calls it laid back.
Candid is the word he uses first. Earthy tones, natural light and a leaning toward the cinematic, with couples caught mid-moment rather than arranged. He does give direction through the portraits so nobody is left guessing, but the phrase he keeps returning to is that staged, self-conscious photographs are not what he makes. Every frame is edited by him, no overseas editing house, no software doing the sorting.
Couples marrying anywhere between Bunbury and Margaret River who want the day recorded as it happened rather than staged, and who would rather feel comfortable than composed. He shoots full weddings and elopements alike, and takes couple sessions and travel work between them.
Collections run and with a custom quote available for anything in; the detail comes by email once he knows the date. He is booking 2026 now and holds limited 2027 dates. There is no published turnaround figure; his own answer is that he has options to suit whatever timeframe a couple needs.
Nine years in one region, and it shows in the locations: Sugarloaf Rock at sunset, a backyard in Bunbury, a catamaran off the coast, a farm in Margaret River. He knows where the light falls in each of them, which is the part a couple cannot research for themselves.
