The Lucky Hotel is a pub on Hunter Street in Newcastle's East End, and its wedding offer is built around The Courtyard — an open-air space with brick walls, cobblestone floors, soaring ceilings, a living green wall and its own set of arches that the venue points out are “perfectly set for an aisle”. The tone is unapologetically a party: disco balls, DJs, neon, a VW kombi bar in the courtyard. In its own words, “if there's one thing The Lucky knows how to do, it's put on one hell of a party.”

Setting & Style

Four named spaces. The Courtyard takes 120 seated or 200 standing and carries the ceremony and the reception. Ms Lucky's Lounge is the semi-private room off it — luxe red booth seating, marble tables, neon and mood lighting — sold both as an intimate wedding space and as somewhere older guests and small children can step aside without leaving the party. The Drum Bar handles cocktail-style events under its drum pendants and stained glass, and the Naughty Corner is the relaxed group space. All four have a private bar, music connectivity and a TV.

Ideal For

Couples who want a city wedding they can walk out of and straight upstairs to bed — there are 30 boutique rooms above the venue and guests get 10% off. It suits a seated dinner from 40 to 120 or a standing party to 200, and it explicitly caters for the whole span from elopements and private ceremonies through to receptions, afterparties, hens and bucks. Anyone wanting a formal, quiet, traditional wedding should look elsewhere.

Pricing is published in full and is current. Seated dining is $75 per head for a two-course alternate drop and $95 for three, with a minimum of 40 and a maximum of 120 guests. Canapés are $8 each with a minimum order of 20 pieces per selection. Beverage packages run $100 per head for four hours or $120 for five, covering sparkling, two whites, two reds, house spirits and soft drinks; a pay-as-you-go bar tab is the alternative. Grazing tables are $25 or $45 per head, cakeage $3.50 shared or $8.50 individually plated, and an oyster bar is $1,800 for an hour and a half. Deposits are $1,000 Sunday to Thursday and $3,000 Friday to Saturday. All food, beverages and dietary requirements must be finalised and paid four weeks before the date — and the venue states plainly that it cannot accommodate dietary requirements raised on the day. Complimentary extras worth asking for: cloak room, red carpet and bollards.
