Hunter Wetlands Centre
About
Overview & Vibe
Hunter Wetlands Centre is a not-for-profit conservation site at Shortland, ten to fifteen minutes from Newcastle, with a purpose-built wedding chapel overlooking the Water Ribbon Pond. The pitch is exactly what the place is: “exchanging vows under the open sky, surrounded by lush greenery, serene waters, and the harmonious melodies of native birds”. A wedding here supports a wetland restoration charity rather than a hospitality business.
Setting & Style
The chapel has permanent seating for 70 and looks over the pond. Around it are boardwalks, a bush tucker garden, melaleuca swamp and walking trails, with a two-storey visitor centre on the water. Indoors there are three hire rooms: the Melaleuca Room with an 85-inch screen and wetland views, the boardroom-style Egret Room, and the BHP Theatrette with tiered seating, a 120-inch screen and a built-in sound system.
Ideal For
Couples who want a ceremony in a natural setting close to the city, at a scale of about seventy, and who like the idea of the fee going to conservation. It suits an outdoor ceremony followed by something small and indoors — the rooms are meeting spaces rather than ballrooms, so a large seated reception is not what this venue does. Photography options across the site are genuinely unusual: open water, reed beds, a boardwalk and stands of paperbark.
The Need-to-Knows
The chapel is $550 to hire and that is a ceremony fee, not a wedding package: the centre “provide[s] recommendations for onsite catering” through its licensed cafe rather than running a wedding kitchen. Room hire is separate and priced by the day. The site is open to the public 9am–4pm seven days, so confirm exclusivity and timing. There is no accommodation. Set-up and cleaning are provided but “additional charges may apply for after hours events” — worth pinning down if you want an evening.
Standout Feature
The chapel itself — a permanent, purpose-built ceremony space seating seventy, on the edge of a working wetland, ten minutes from the centre of Newcastle. Nothing else in this region offers that combination, and at $550 it is among the cheapest ceremony hires in the database.

Price Notes
- HIRE FEES ARE PUBLISHED IN FULL, AND THEY ARE LOW BY THIS CAMPAIGN'S STANDARDS. THE CHAPEL: "For a fee of $550, you can secure the chapel for your ceremony." THE INDOOR ROOMS, from the live functions page: MELALEUCA ROOM, the larger room, with a large screen TV and teleconferencing, looking out over the wetlands — capacity 80 theatre or 40 with tables — $330 full day, $190 half day. EGRET ROOM, boardroom style with a large screen TV, teleconferencing and a whiteboard — capacity 10 — $120 full day, $80 half day. BHP THEATRETTE, with modern AV, a 120-inch screen and built-in audio (speakers and mic) — capacity 50, fixed tiered seating — $330 full day, $190 half day. A DISCREPANCY WORTH KNOWING: the venue's own "Venues Hire A4 Brochure" PDF, created 25 February 2026 and therefore current, prices the EGRET ROOM at "$330 full day $190 half day" — the same as the two large rooms — while the live functions page prices it at $120/$80. The brochure's Egret block otherwise duplicates the Melaleuca rate line, so it reads as a copy-paste error; the LIVE PAGE FIGURES ARE RECORDED as the venue's current statement and the brochure figure is noted rather than used. Confirm at booking. WHAT IS INCLUDED, from the February 2026 brochure: "Our team will provide set up and cleaning services. However, additional charges may apply for after hours events or excessive cleaning." Catering "can be arranged through our on-site licensed cafe". Parking and transport: "Conveniently located just off the Newcastle Link Road near Hexham Interchange, our site offers coach and vehicle parking and is walking distance to trains and bus transport." TEAM-BUILDING ADD-ONS are offered and are unusual for a wedding venue: "guided tours, canoeing or hands-on conservation activities". THE SITE IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC 9AM TO 4PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, so exclusivity and evening access should be confirmed rather than assumed. THIS IS A REGISTERED CONSERVATION CHARITY, not a hospitality business — the domain is wetlands.org.au and the site runs annual reports, memberships and donation pages alongside venue hire.
- SITE-QUALITY NOTE: the centre's Contact page ships PLACEHOLDER LOREM IPSUM in production. Its FAQ section reads "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit..." under three real questions ("How does your charity work?", "Are you open for partnerships or sponsors?", "How do you choose the projects to help?"). Unfinished rather than misleading, but it means the FAQ answers nothing.
