Overview & Vibe

Craigie Knowe is the oldest vineyard on Tasmania's east coast — five hectares under vine at Cranbrook, on land settled in the 1820s with the original stone house built in the 1840s. It is emphatically not a purpose-built function centre, and says so: “an authentic East Coast vineyard setting (not a built venue)”. The estate hosts a deliberately limited number of weddings each season.

Setting & Style

Two quite different weddings live here. The timber cellar door and barn take intimate celebrations of 20 to 40 — stone buildings, barrels, and an arched doorway that photographs beautifully. Larger weddings go into a 12m x 15m Hoecker marquee with clear walls and a white ceiling, pitched in the vineyard, seating up to 200 under festoon lighting. Ceremonies can be held anywhere across the property — among the vines, overlooking the rows, or beside the heritage buildings. Dining comes from Flora's, the on-site restaurant, and every wine poured is estate-grown.

Ideal For

Couples who want a working vineyard rather than a styled venue, and who are happy to bring their own caterer — the estate provides the commercial kitchen and recommends five Tasmanian caterers, but food is the couple's arrangement. Also for guests who would rather not drive home: self-contained camping in the vineyard is complimentary, so the celebration can end with waking up among the vines. Access is listed, entertainingly, as car, bus, helicopter or bush plane.

The Need-to-Knows

The marquee is seasonal — September to April only. The cellar door runs all year, so a winter wedding here means the smaller room. Venue hire is a flat fee that varies four ways: by space, by month, by day of week, and by whether you use the estate's catering — from $1,000 for a mid-week cellar-door wedding in the shoulder season to $4,000 for a weekend marquee in peak with outside caterers, with public-holiday surcharges of $1,000–$1,500 above 75 guests. Beverage packages are separate at $80–$110 per person. The couple supplies styling, table dressing, outdoor heating and a dance floor (or uses the cellar door). Ceremony and reception run 3pm to 11pm, and the cellar door closes to the public before 2pm on your day.
