Broome Civic Centre
About
Overview & Vibe
The Broome Civic Centre is the town’s main hall, on the block that has been Broome’s civic heart since 1904. The current building opened in 1973 to a design by Norman Rees meant to reflect Broome’s Asian influence, and its predecessor hosted the town’s dances, debutante balls and wedding receptions before that. It is a working community venue rather than a wedding specialist — and it is the largest room in Broome.
Setting & Style
The main space is Jimmy Chi Hall, named for the writer of Bran Nue Dae: a large polished wooden hall of about 546 m² taking 400 people, with a raised stage, full lighting and AV, acoustic treatment and bi-fold doors. The Pigram Garden Theatre is a newer 363-capacity space with a terraced seating area, bar and a verandah for pre-function drinks, and the Sammy Room works as a break-out or pre-function room. A commercial kitchen with cool room adjoins the hall for caterers.
Ideal For
Large Broome weddings that need a blank canvas and a real stage — and couples happy to bring their own caterer. At 400 people this is comfortably the biggest indoor capacity in town, and the equipment list is a production venue’s rather than a function centre’s. It suits people building the day themselves rather than buying a package.
The Need-to-Knows
The Centre does not cater. It hires you a kitchen — dishwasher, oven, cooktop, cool room, plate-up and ramped delivery access — and you bring a caterer, so there is no per-head food price to compare. Corkage is $12.00 a bottle and glasses are $1.10 each. Room hire itself is quote-only, but almost everything else is published in detail: staffing from $55.00 an hour, security at $78.65 an hour with a four-hour minimum, audio packages $115.00 to $445.00 a day, a vinyl dance floor at $54.00 and tablecloths at $21.50 to $24.00 each. Public liability cover of $10 million is required.
Standout Feature
Jimmy Chi Hall’s floor. A large polished wooden hall with a proper stage, theatre lighting and 349 chairs is a rare thing in a town this size — and the building’s continuity matters: the hall on this block has been where Broome held its weddings for more than a century.
