A family-owned Coonawarra vineyard on the Riddoch Highway, two minutes from Penola and walkable from most of the town’s accommodation. The Smiberts have farmed here for over a hundred years, bought vineyard land in 2007 and opened the cellar door in October 2017. Everything poured is grown on the estate’s own 80-plus hectares of Terra Rossa — the venue’s phrase is “from grower to glass”.

Setting & Style

Three spaces, and you can use all of them. The Barrel Hall is the newest — a large hall lined with wine barrels that takes up to 160 seated and configures for either a cocktail or a sit-down ceremony and reception. The Cellar Door is modern and bright with large windows onto the vines, opening through to outdoor decking for arrival drinks and canapés. The vineyard lawn is flat and expansive, framed by large native trees and a golden elm, and suits both a ceremony and lawn games. A sweeping driveway opens onto it.

Couples who want a genuine Coonawarra winery at a real scale — up to 160 seated among the barrels — with the freedom to bring their own caterer and guests within walking distance of their beds.

Catering is genuinely open. “We have an open catering policy for licensed and insured professional caterers. We can provide a recommended list of professional catering firms we work with.” The estate supplies the site and the wine, not the food.
160 is the Barrel Hall seated. It is the only guest number published, and no capacity is given for the lawn or the cellar door.
There is no accommodation on the estate, and the venue does not pretend otherwise — it offers “close proximity to local accommodation” in Penola instead, two minutes away and walkable.
The cellar door is a working one. Open daily 11am–6pm in summer and by appointment at other times; tastings are complimentary, and groups of ten or more should ring ahead. Expect other visitors on the property outside your hire.
A development is in progress. The cellar door page describes “an upcoming boardroom and outdoor balcony development with views across the vineyard” — worth asking about for a date far out.

Pricing is provided on enquiry — no venue hire fee, per-head rate, minimum spend, deposit or package figure is published. Everything starts with an enquiry.
Catering is open and the estate says so plainly: it has an open catering policy for licensed and insured professional caterers, and can provide a recommended list of the catering firms it works with. Food is therefore a separate budget line and the couple chooses the supplier.
The cellar door page adds 'Do I need to book? No booking required for general tastings - just turn up between 11am and 6pm. For groups of 10 or more, please call ahead.' A couple should confirm whether their hire is exclusive.
Tastings are complimentary and the estate is entirely self-grown: 'All wines are made entirely from fruit grown across Whistle Post's two vineyard sites - over 80 hectares of the famed Coonawarra Terra Rossa soil. You're not just tasting wines, you are tasting a specific place, grown and made by the people who will be pouring for you.' 'Tastings are complimentary. Wines are also available by the glass and bottle to enjoy on-site or take home.' On tasting: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Rose, Cabernet Franc and an Estate Field Blend.
A credential the estate publishes: 'Award-winning wines - the current release Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received 95 points from James Halliday, one of Australia's most respected wine critics.' Recorded as a wine credential, not a wedding one.
The property is still being built out. The cellar door page describes the Barrel Hall as having 'an upcoming boardroom and outdoor balcony development with views across the vineyard'. Worth asking about for a date more than a year out.
The family history is published and dates the venue. 'Whistle Post Estate is family owned and operated, run by Brian, Jennifer, Angus and Heather Smibert. The Smibert family has a rich history in the Coonawarra region, owning sheep and cattle farms for over 100 years. In 2007 the Smibert family purchased a piece of premium vineyard land on the famed Coonawarra strip, now known as the V&A Lane Vineyard... In 2012 the Whistle Post label was established... Whistle Post expanded further in 2016 with the purchase of the McCrae Vineyard site on the Riddoch Highway. Following renovations, our new home was opened in October 2017.' The name comes from a railway artefact: 'Along the eastern edge of the V&A Lane Vineyard runs the old Coonawarra railway track. Active from the late 1800s until the 1980s... On the edge of the railway track stands a Whistle Post instructing trains to let off a warning whistle as they approached the nearby V&A Lane road crossing. While the line is no longer in use, the Whistle Post can still be found along the tracks today.'
