Overview & Vibe

St Leonards Vineyard sits on a bend of the Murray River at Wahgunyah, and has been making wine since 1860 — one of Australia's oldest wineries. The estate describes itself as “a hidden gem” and a “unique slice of history”, and that is the register it plays in: old-world charm, historic buildings, river frontage and a family-owned operation rather than a polished events machine. It is the quieter sibling of the better-known All Saints Estate a short drive away.

Setting & Style

Three named ceremony spots, each doing something different. Under the Gumtree is a hundred-year-old gum over lawn and vines beside the Cellar Door. The Band Stand is slightly elevated, looking across the Cabernet Franc block to a natural Murray River lagoon, so “no one misses a moment”. Harold's Room — named for Harold Cofield, who worked the winery for years — is the timber-lined room beside the historic Cellar Door, for ceremonies that need to be indoors. Receptions run in The Barrel Hall, lined with barriques under an open barn-style roof with original beams, its big doors thrown open to lawns, vineyard and river; drinks and canapés happen on The Lawn in between.

Ideal For

Couples who want a historic winery on the Murray without the formality of a castle estate, and who like the idea of a barn full of wine barrels for the party. Catering is overseen by Jack Cassidy, Head Chef at KIN, the restaurant at the sister property, so the food is handled by a serious kitchen even though St Leonards' own kitchen only opens publicly once a month. The estate assigns a wedding and events team to run the day.

The Need-to-Knows

No capacity and no pricing are published. The wedding page commits only to catering “a small private celebration to a large extravagant party”. The single guest number anywhere on the site belongs to Harold's Room, described as suiting “small groups of around 20-80 people” for meetings and social events — that is one small room, not the Barrel Hall, and should not be read as the venue's ceiling. Packages exist but are quoted only on enquiry. There is no accommodation at St Leonards itself; the eight houses the group offers are at Mount Ophir Estate seven minutes away, opposite All Saints, and in Corowa. Note too that the Cellar Door opens only Saturdays and Sundays 11am–4pm and the vineyard Kitchen only on the first Saturday of the month.

Standout Feature

The Barrel Hall. A working barrel store lined with barriques, chandeliers hung from original timber beams, and doors that open straight onto the lawn and the Murray — a reception room that is genuinely part of the winery rather than a function space dressed to look like one.
