Kingfisher Bay Resort sits on the calm western bay of K’gari (Fraser Island), the world’s largest sand island and a World Heritage site. It opened in 1992 as Australia’s first ecotourism resort — native-timber buildings kept to two storeys so they never break the tree line, an approach that won the country’s top architectural prize. A wedding here is a destination wedding without a passport.

Setting & Style

Three ceremony settings: Sunset Beach on the sheltered bay, the Secret Garden, and The Atrium inside the timber main complex. Receptions run in The Ballroom, on the Stirling Deck or Wongari Deck, in the Wongari Den, or as restaurant dining — decks strung with festoon lights under the eucalypts, or a draped ballroom, depending on which way you lean.

Ideal For

Couples who want their guests to make a trip of it. Everything runs through an on-island Wedding Coordinator, and the resort layers on a whole week — a guided 4WD tour of the coloured sands and lakes, the Island Day Spa, private rehearsal dinners, humpback whale watching from August to October, and the Illumina light and sound show after dark.

The Need-to-Knows

Guest numbers are set by package band, not by a published room capacity: the Elopement package takes 2–10, Intimate 10–30, and Premium carries a minimum of 30. No maximum is published anywhere, and neither is a per-head price — everything is “request a quote”. Note also that guests arrive by ferry, which the packages cover for the couple only.

Guests reach the venue by ferry. The packages cover the return passenger ferry for the couple only — your guests arrange their own crossing, and a vehicle ferry is a paid upgrade.
