The Tailrace Centre sits on the bank of the Tamar at Riverside, five minutes from the Launceston CBD, and has been running weddings for more than fifteen years. It is a purpose-built function centre rather than a homestead or a winery, and that shows in the range: three indoor rooms and a riverside lawn that between them cover an eighty-guest chapel dinner and a six-hundred-guest reception on the same site.

Setting & Style

The Willow Lawn is the outdoor space — festoon lighting, two fire pits, lawn games and its own private driveway, set for ceremonies, long-table feasts up to 120 or cocktail receptions up to 200. The Chapel is glass-walled over a water garden with a door straight out to the courtyard, seating 80. The Tamar Room takes 90 seated or 150 for cocktails with river views, and the Freycinet is the big one — 24m by 24m, fairy lights across the ceiling, full blackout, bi-fold walls into the adjoining rooms, and banquet seating for 400.

Ideal For

Couples who want the whole day handled in one place close to town — and particularly large Tasmanian weddings, since very few northern venues can seat several hundred.

The Need-to-Knows

Pricing is venue hire, not per head. Ceremony only $1,835; Tamar or Chapel reception $2,450; Freycinet reception $3,000; cocktail reception $1,849; Willow Lawn cocktail reception $3,050. Combined ceremony-and-reception packages run $3,045 to $3,700. Catering and drinks are quoted separately from a menu brochure that is not published online.
Figures come from the 2026 Tailrace Wedding Guide, dated 17 July 2026 — which notes plainly that “venue hire prices are indicative and may change”.
Ceremonies run between 2pm and 4pm, with 3pm the recommended start. Hire includes 30 white chairs, a signing table, a wireless microphone and speaker, and an iPad for music. An in-house celebrant is available for $700.
Receptions run 5pm to 11:30pm and a $500 minimum bar spend applies to bar service. A $1,000 deposit confirms the date; dates can be held for seven days.
The Chapel is always reserved as wet-weather backup for Willow Lawn ceremonies, and the Tamar Room backs up a Willow Lawn reception — so an outdoor wedding here has a roof held in reserve rather than a contingency you arrange yourself.
Room setup, furniture, linen, crockery, cutlery, glassware, bar staff and the food service team are included in the hire. Styling extras are priced individually: arbours $125–$175, dance floor $550, chair covers $7.50 each.
