Trenavin Chapel

Phillip Island, Victoria Capacity: Up to 150

About

Overview & Vibe

A white weatherboard chapel with a Gothic arched door, standing alone on a clifftop lawn on the grounds of Ventnor Estate, Phillip Island, looking north across Bass Strait to the Mornington Peninsula. It is a ceremony venue and nothing else — there is no reception here, and the site says so plainly.

Setting & Style

Timber pews inside, a bell tower and pointed windows outside, and then nothing but mown grass running to the cliff edge and the sea. A separate Summer House can be added for a small pre- or post-ceremony gathering — cake and champagne rather than a sit-down.

Ideal For

Couples who want the ceremony to be the thing: a small chapel service on a headland, then everyone drives to dinner somewhere else on the island.

The Need-to-Knows

  • The whole price list is published, and it is hire by the hour, not per head. The Chapel is $4,500–$6,000 depending on guest band and whether you book two hours or three. The Summer House adds $1,000–$1,500 and can only be booked with the three-hour block. Extra hours are a flat $500.
  • There is no reception. “Can I have a marquee reception on site? No at present we are not providing this service.” The Summer House is for “a small pre or post event function” only.
  • The chapel seats 80 and the pews cannot be moved. “Our Chapel seats 80 guests comfortably or up to 130 guests standing”, and the booking form's top band runs to a maximum of 150 — but everyone above 80 “will be required to stand outside, in the Summer House or in the gardens.” Asked directly whether pews can come out: “Unfortunately, pews cannot be removed.”
  • Toilets are on you. Over 80 guests a portable toilet is strongly recommended; over 100 it is mandatory.
  • So is the gate. “you will be required to provide a person on the front gate to ensure that only invited guests enter the premises.”
  • Access is only 1–1½ hours before the ceremony, flowers must arrive and leave on the day, and there is a $500 bond plus a $1,000 non-refundable booking fee.
  • Plan the transport. “Is Uber available on the Island? Not normally. Guest should either be bussed in or share rides where appropriate.” Download your music beforehand too — “being on the edge of a cliff, the internet isn't always reliable.”

Standout Feature

A chapel on a headland with the sea on three sides — and a price list you can read before you enquire.

Price Notes

  • THE FULL PRICE LIST IS PUBLISHED ON THE BOOKING FORM, AND IT IS HIRE BY DURATION AND GUEST BAND, NOT PER HEAD. 'PRICES: CHAPEL - up to 50 ppl / 50 - 100 / over 100 (max150). 2 hours (no extension): 4,500 / 5,000 / 5,500. 3 hours: 5,000 / 5,500 / 6,000. SUMMER HOUSE Booking (only with the 3 hour block): 1,000 / 1,200 / 1,500. EXTEND BY THE HOUR - Flat rate $500.' Note the two-hour block is explicitly 'no extension' - only the three-hour booking can be extended, and only the three-hour booking can add the Summer House.
  • THE DEPOSIT AND BOND: 'An additional bond of $500 is payable with the balance one month prior to the event date, to cover any damage or breakages. Or if required to make up any additional payments for extra staff or time.' 'To make a booking please complete, sign and return this form together with a non-refundable booking fee of $1000. Booking will only be accepted and confirmed once the below form is completed and payment is received.'
  • TOILETS ARE THE COUPLE'S PROBLEM, AND THE THRESHOLD IS PUBLISHED: '** Guests over 80 guests - we strongly recommend hiring a port-a-loo. ** Guest over 100 - a port-a-loo MUST be hired.' That is a real cost most venues absorb and this one does not.
  • THIS IS A CEREMONY VENUE, NOT A RECEPTION VENUE, AND IT SAYS SO: 'Can I have a marquee reception on site? No at present we are not providing this service.' The Summer House is for 'a small pre or post event function... at an additional charge for hire of the space. You can arrange your own caterers for food and beverages with full use of the Summer House facilities. Alternatively, our Co-Ordinator can arrange catering for you.' And: 'Use of the Summer House is provided for pre or post event celebrations, but this MUST be booked along with booking the Chapel.' price_per_head and dietary_options_supported are NULL because the venue does not cater - catering, if any, is arranged by the couple or through the coordinator.
  • YOU SUPPLY THE GATEKEEPER: 'Will you provide security on the day? Our Co-ordinator will be available to assist on the day, however you will be required to provide a person on the front gate to ensure that only invited guests enter the premises.' Unusual, and a job to allocate before the day.
  • ACCESS AND STYLING WINDOWS ARE TIGHT: 'What time do we have access to the property on the day? Access is 1 - 1 1/2 hours prior to your ceremony.' 'You are welcome to arrange flowers and other additions to personalise your wedding. Please note that these additions will need to be delivered on the day of the event and removed the same day.'
  • TWO PRACTICAL WARNINGS FROM THE VENUE ITSELF: 'Is Uber available on the Island? Not normally. Guest should either be bussed in or share rides where appropriate.' And on music: 'The Chapel has full Wi-Fi connectivity. Your choice of music will need to be downloaded prior to the day, as being on the edge of a cliff, the internet isn't always reliable. Microphones are available and there are speakers both inside and outside the Chapel.'
  • SEATING EXTRAS: 'Do you provide some seating around the summer house? We can provide an additional 20 outdoor chairs available on the day.'
  • THE PRICE TABLE IS UNDATED. It sits on the live booking form rather than in a PDF, so there is no creation or modification date to check, and the page carries a 2026 copyright line. Recorded as published, with the absence of a date noted.
